How to Apply
We're glad you have chosen to apply to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. The next several months will be a time of excitement and some anxiety as you take the steps to achieve your goal of becoming a physician. The School of Medicine admissions staff is here for you when you get stuck your peer contact can answer any questions during the process.
Admissions Process Steps:
Step 1 — Submitting documents
All applicants to the School of Medicine must participate in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Once AMCAS verifies and processes a student's application, this information is provided to the School of Medicine. Please note this verification process can take up to eight weeks. The School of Medicine must receive this verification before applicants can move forward in the admissions review process. If you wait until October 1 to submit your application to AMCAS, it may be December 1 before the School of Medicine receives your verified application information.
- Priority Review June 1 – September 1: Applicants who submit their completed applications to AMCAS during these dates receive Priority Application Review by the School of Medicine.
- Standard Review September 2 – October 15: Applicants who submit their completed applications to AMCAS during these dates receive Standard Application Review by the School of Medicine.
- Re-Applicants: Students who are re-applying to the School of Medicine are strongly encouraged to submit their AMCAS application by September 1 to receive Priority Review.
Step 2 — Secondary applications
This information is unique to the School of Medicine and gives our admissions committee more specific information on applicants. After residency status has been reviewed, the secondary application is emailed to all students who filed an AMCAS application. The secondary application comes with a fee of $75. All secondary applications are due within five business days of receipt (no exceptions). Please note: failure to return the secondary application within five business days will result in your application being considered INCOMPLETE and will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.
Step 3 — Interviews
The School of Medicine uses structured Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI) for the admissions interview process. Each applicant selected for interview will receive information about the MMI schedule. Interviews take place September through January.
Step 4 — In-state applicants
Proof of residency must be submitted. Applicants will be provided with the paperwork and submission requirements as part of the secondary application packet.
Step 5 — Admissions committee review
The applicant's part is now complete. Admissions Committee members begin the thorough review of each applicant in preparation for a series of four meetings, January through April.
Step 6 — Admissions notification
Each applicant will receive written notification of the decision by the Admissions Committee. All notifications are sent out approximately the 15th of each month, January through April. No news is good news! The committee can't review each applicant at each meeting, so there is a rolling admissions process through those four months.
