BS-MD Clinical Experiences

Requirements

Early clinical experiences are an important part of the program and help prepare students for medical school. Each student in the BS-MD program, at either UNLV or UNR, will be required to participate in structured, evaluated, clinical experiences.

Summer, Year I – Primary Care

Students will complete four weeks of supervised clinical observational experience, in a University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine clinical setting in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine. A limited number of general surgery positions will be available. Students are encouraged to return to their home community for these experiences. Students must complete the online sign up for these courses by April 1 of the spring semester of their freshman year.

Summer, Year II – Rural and/or Urban Underserved

Students will complete four weeks of supervised observational experience in a rural or urban underserved setting. Rural experiences will be completed at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Elko campus and possible other rural sites, as available. Urban underserved will be completed in southern Nevada, as sites are developed. Housing is available in Elko for students selecting this option.

Summer, Year III (Optional) – Medical Specialties

Students will have the opportunity to complete four weeks of supervised observational experience in their medical specialty of interest, as positions are available. This is not required.
