Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology
The Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology Graduate Program is a campus-wide interdisciplinary program for Ph.D. and M.S. students, part of the Molecular Biosciences Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. Over 30 participating faculty participate from many Departments in the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, College of Science, and CABNR (Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources). The CMPP Graduate Program is home-based in the Department of Pharmacology, and the Department of Physiology & Cell Biology in the School of Medicine. The research faculty in these two Departments together annually average $9 million in research grant funding to support an extensive array of research projects, representing 41% of the total research grant funds at the School of Medicine. The CMPP Students
The Ph.D. students in the CMPP Program pursue a rigorous training program with diverse research opportunities in modern Physiology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, and Neurobiology using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The program is designed to prepare the student for a competitive career in academic, government, or private industry research in these high profile disciplines. Additionally, medical students may earn a M.D./Ph.D. degree through the program. A shared first year curriculum and series of lab rotations introduce students to the full range of the Molecular Biosciences research community.
Research Funding Support
Sources include mainly the National Institutes of Health, and other government and foundation sources. Graduate research is excellent preparation for careers in biological and biomedical research, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
CMPP students have the opportunity to participate in several research centers which support student research, faculty, and core facilities. The campus is the home of three NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence: the COBRE for Smooth Muscle Plasticity, COBRE in Cell Biology of Signaling across Membranes, and the newest, the COBRE for Integrative Neuroscience. The University also hosts a statewide NIH-funded program for research projects and infrastructure across the state, the Nevada INBRE IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence.
