Commitments to Residents

Resident Handbook: Section 1

The programs of education of medical students entering residency after graduation (Graduate Medical Education – or GME) are part of the overall and continuing dedication to higher education supported fully by the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) as evidenced by a commitment to providing the necessary educational, financial, and human resources to support Graduate Medical Education.

These two authorities, NSHE and UNR, are committed to:

  1. Selecting quality students for residency training through the National Resident Matching Program;
  2. Establishing employment rules and procedures based on the university regulating authorities that are supportive of residents and their training, and meet the Accreditation for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements;
  3. Informing residents about individual program requirements and educational goals;
  4. Establishing policies and procedures for the conduct of GME programs to meet ACGME institutional and program requirements;
  5. Ensuring that residents understand the critical role of professionalism and ethical behavior in medicine;
