Department of Family and Community Medicine: Las Vegas

family medicine clerkship students

Clerkship Program Overview

The Family Medicine Clerkship is a six-week rotation, offered in groups of four to six throughout the year. This clerkship is part of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Year 3 Structure and is one of seven required clerkships for third year medical students. Medical students participate in a variety of different activities in locations around the community, in an effort to simulate the many possible practice roles of a family physician.

This educational program is structured with both inpatient and outpatient experiences. Students will rotate for one to two weeks in an inpatient setting and four to five weeks in outpatient settings. Clerkship students work under the guidance of senior residents and attending physicians, seeing patients presenting a variety of health conditions.

Students will learn the principles of family medicine care and gain an understanding of the critical role of family physicians within the health system. Patient visits are structured under direct supervision, wherein students will learn to elicit patient medical and social history, perform physical examinations, formulate differential diagnoses, and propose plans for the initial evaluation and management of patients. Clerkship students will also gain experience managing follow-up visits with patients having one or more common chronic diseases. Among other topics, special attention is paid to aiding students in developing critical thinking and life long learning skills.
