School of Medicine and UNLV experts explore disparities in health care at collaborative forum
Issues related to economic status, gender, age affect efforts to improve state's overall health

Nevada was ranked as the 37th healthiest state in 2013, according to America's Health Rankings, but not everyone is affected equally by this low state ranking. Experts from University of Nevada School of Medicine and UNLV met in April to discuss major health disparities in Nevada and ways to address differences among population groups. Health disparities are preventable diseases, injuries and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups.
Experts and researchers collaborated on April 17, 2014 at the UNLV Boyd School of Law to present a wide spectrum of issues regarding health disparities, addressing who is and isn't being reached by prevention and treatment efforts in the Las Vegas area. Presenters delved into why health disparities exist among certain population groups, shared research and explored solutions. Faculty from the University of Nevada School of Medicine, UNLV School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Community Health Sciences and Boyd School of Law were represented at the event.
Panelists addressed topics including pedestrian injuries and deaths, gender differences in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease, reliance on hospital emergency rooms to treat mentally ill patients, oral health in the elderly population and legal approaches to combating elder abuse. The event was sponsored by the Nevada IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE), a National Institutes of Health (NIH) program designed to help traditionally underfunded states build biomedical infrastructure. Nevada INBRE also works with Nevada System of Higher Education partner institutions to promote biomedical research knowledge and educational opportunities across the state.
