Teaching medical students is at the heart of what we do at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Each of us contributes in some critical way to medical education. Together we have the satisfaction teaching and training the next generation of health professionals and advancing biomedical science.
Last year one of our distinguished faculty physicians, Josh Bardin, M.D., approached me with the concern he has for the students he has taught for the last several years. He wanted to know what he could do to increase the level of scholarship support available at UNR Med so as to lessen the financial burden our students face. In addition to establishing an endowed scholarship with his wife, Carol Cheney, M.D., he wanted to further increase scholarship support so that we can continue our 48-year history of graduating accomplished and compassionate physicians. Together, Josh and Carol led the formation of a Scholarship Support Committee comprised of fellow faculty members, alumni and community leaders who felt just as they do about supporting our students.
One of the major outcomes of the committee's work is to establish a scholarship endowment supported by faculty and staff members, because together we can make a difference for our students.
Initial gifts have already been made toward the establishment of the Faculty and Staff Medical Student Scholarship Endowment at the School of Medicine. Our goal is to start with a fund of $25,000 to produce an annual scholarship. We are grateful to those who have already joined us in pledging a gift, and we invite you to join us this month with a contribution in any amount that fits your budget and charitable goals.
Participation by faculty and staff is strictly voluntary. A gift in any amount will make a difference for our students, and will have lasting influence on their careers.
There are several ways to participate including online, payroll deduction, or by check. By supporting this fund, those of us who work here are sending a compelling message to our generous alumni, partners, friends and donors, that we, too, believe UNR Med is a worthy investment.
In yet a further demonstration of the depth of their support, Drs. Bardin and Cheney have pledged to match the first commitments to the Faculty and Staff Medical Student Scholarship Endowment, up to $3,000. Your gift will now go even further!
Your contributions, of many kinds, to the success of our students does not go unnoticed. We thank you for considering this new opportunity to come together to support our students.
If you have questions about this effort or how to make your gift to the Faculty and Staff Scholarship Endowment, please contact Seema Donahoe, director of development.
