One third of PA Studies class has ties to Renown
UNR Med accepted more than 725 applications to its Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program. Following the interview process, the brand new program admitted 24 candidates who represent an array of diverse clinical, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Of those 24 inaugural class members, eight are current or former Renown Health employees!
In services of its mission to train flexible and committed primary care clinicians dedicated to strengthening healthcare in their communities, the program focused on recruiting Nevadans who will stay in the state, especially in medically underserved and rural areas.
The PA Studies program partners with community based faculty and institutions to prepare students for clinical practice. Renown Health, the program's principal clinical teaching partner and major supporter, is committed to helping kick-start the program with the expertise of its providers and leading-edge training sites.
The Physician Assistant Studies Program Class of 2019 has been selected. The class is made up of 24 candidates with various ethnic, clinical and cultural backgrounds.
UNR Med lays the groundwork for Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is moving forward with plans for a new academic department.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education's Board of Regents in December 2016, and will be helped and supported by a community-based steering committee. The committee, which includes Doug Merrill, M.D. and Myron Bethel, M.D. of Renown Health, is tasked with developing a proposal for the structure of the department and its chair position in response to community needs.
A consultant will meet with the steering committee, Renown leadership and community providers later this month to provide additional guidance.
