Goals/Objectives

  • Provide the student with practical experience in the direct care of patients in a supervised environment.
  • The ability to perform a comprehensive H&P.
  • The ability to develop a comprehensive differential diagnosis and the best medical management plan.
  • Gain skills and effective communication with peers, colleagues, other healthcare providers, patients and their families.
  • To facilitate the transition to the intern year by providing “hands on” learning.

Description of Rotation

Students will be assigned to one of the inpatient general wards teams at Renown Regional Medical Center. The student will be under the direct supervision of the senior resident and will function with few exceptions as an intern. Students will be on call every sixth night and will admit patients to their team working with the senior resident on call. The maximum work load for a sub-intern will be four patient work- ups per call and six ongoing ward patients.

Days off and weekend coverage will be determined at the beginning of the rotation as for any member of the team. Sub-interns are expected to attend daily patient rounds with the team as well as the attending didactic rounds, and will be expected to present their patients to the team and to the attending. Sub-interns will attend daily morning report and resident noon didactic lectures. Some nights rotating with the night float team are expected.

Evaluation Method

Ongoing subjective clinical evaluation by the preceptor

Grade

  • Honors: An exceptional performance which exceeds all course objectives
  • High Pass: A performance which exceeds most course objectives
  • Pass: A performance which meets the course objectives
  • Fail: A performance which does not meet the course objectives

Grading Criteria

To achieve honors the student must excel in areas of knowledge, clinical care and professionalism; and function at the level of an intern. Students with marginal or failing performance will be counseled midway through the elective and must demonstrate significant improvement in the areas of deficit to receive a passing grade.

Special Notes

Students may request a team but the attendings may vary depending on the schedule. Limited to one fourth-year student per inpatient team.
