Maternal Fetal Medicine
At the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, our maternal fetal medicine doctors, also known as perinatologists, or high risk obstetricians, are trained to care for women with high risk pregnancies. High risk pregnancies can be present in women over the age of 35, women with diabetes or hypertension, or women with multiple gestations. Don't be worried when you get referred to a specialist, because our maternal fetal medicine team is committed to your health and welcoming that healthy new bundle of joy.
Consider consulting with one of our maternal fetal medicine doctors if you have a medical condition that may complicate your pregnancy, such as an infectious disease, heart disease, kidney disease, or you've had pregnancy complications in the past or recurrent pregnancy losses. Also, please speak with our specialists regarding your strong family history with cancer to discuss genetic cancer possibilities.
Our high risk pregnancy doctors can provide several screenings when necessary to look for abnormalities in the fetus such as birth defects, spina bifida, cleft palate, down syndrome and others. Tests are often done through blood samples, ultrasounds, or minimally invasive procedures.
Pregnancy is risky for all women and complications can cause further anxiety. Perinatologists at the School of Medicine are here to put you at ease and make you feel comfortable so you can enjoy your pregnancy.
