Dear Alumni Association Members,

I, Brenda Shen, am truly honored to be a recipient of the School of Medicine Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment. As a student who was accepted into medical school one year ago, I am grateful for the opportunities this scholarship will present me in my pursuit.

As I start my second year of medical school, I look back on how far I have gotten since I entered my first year. At first, I was shocked at how much different medical school is from high school and even college, in terms of academics and faculty. I struggled at first to find my footing and discovered the most efficient way to study for all the material presented to me in my first year. But as I got used to changing my way of studying, I was able to realize the quality of what I was studying and how much it piqued my interest. It reinforced my resolve to get through medical school and learn to become the best doctor I can be. And I knew I could not have done what I have without the help of the school faculty. I discovered that they are more than willing to assist me and my peers in achieving that goal. Herein lies the difference between the faculty here and that of the schools I attended previously. After having seen multiple patients alone, I look back at myself one year ago, who would be afraid to speak two words to a patient alone.

During my journey through medical school, I hope to continue learn as much as I can about medicine and achieve the highest grades that I can. Unfortunately, as most medical students know, academics is not the only thing to worry about. Medical school is not cheap and student loans are often something all students dread while attending. However, I can proudly say that my tuition for the upcoming year at the University of Nevada School of Medicine is now paid in full with the help of this award. Receiving this scholarship will help me in my endeavors as I will have fewer financial worries about textbooks, loans, and monthly rent as I am now living on campus. Because of this, I can focus more on my academics and building my social network.

I am deeply humbled and I thank you for supporting students like me.
