Volunteer Mobility Program

Sanford Center for Aging

At the Sanford Center, we recognize that mobility is an issue for many older adults. Getting to doctor's appointments, events, classes and activities or even grocery shopping become a hassle when you don't have the ability to drive yourself around town. Thus, our Volunteer Mobility Program was created with the aim to provide affordable rides for older adults in Washoe County.

Here's how it works:

For volunteers
  • Volunteers are asked to come to a one-time in-person orientation, where subjects such as mileage reimbursement and protocol for reporting elder abuse will be covered.
  • Volunteers must be over the age of 18, have a valid driver's license and a valid form of car insurance. Volunteers also must be able to pass a background check, which will be conducted by the Sanford Center at no cost to participants.
  • Once volunteers are in our system, they will have access to Ride Share, an online database that will allows participants to post and accept rides.
  • Volunteers will be reimbursed $0.35 per mile, we will also provide supplemental insurance and workers compensation.

For clients
  • In order to qualify as a client to be driven by one of our volunteers, participants must be at least 60 years of age, and allow us to visit them in their home.
  • Once you are in our system, you will be able to request rides.

Things you should know:
  • Due to our current ratio of volunteers to clients, we ask that you give us two weeks' notice for every ride that you request so that we have ample time to secure a volunteer for you.
  • At this time, we do not have the capacity to be ADA compliant, and cannot transport persons dependent on wheelchairs or other motorized cruisers.
