Mark L. Stovak M.D., FAAFP, FACSM, CAQ-Sports Medicine: Biography/Education

Professor; Sports Medicine Fellowship Assistant Director

Department of Family and Community Medicine

  • M.D. - University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine
  • B.S. - University of Nevada, Reno

I was born and raised in Reno, NV. I attended UNR and played on the baseball team before going to medical school here at the UNR SOM. In medical school, I met my wife, Leslie Greenberg MD, who is also faculty at the UNRSOM Department of Family and Community Medicine. Our wedding was the day after medical school graduation and we moved to Wichita, KS to start our family medicine residency. Then we went to Muncie, IN for a sports medicine fellowship at Ball State University.

After fellowship, we moved back to Wichita, KS in 2000 where I became a faculty member for the family medicine residency program. I also started the sports medicine fellowship program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita Family Medicine Residency Program at Via Christi Health. I was the sports medicine director, sports medicine fellowship director and eventually the family medicine residency director as well as the head team physician at Wichita State University.

In 2015, we had the fortunate opportunity to move back home to Reno, and I jumped at the chance. I love being back in Reno with family, friends, and the chance to work and teach at my alma mater.
Some of my accomplishments over the years that I am most proud of include being elected to two terms (2011-14) on the Board of Directors of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (the largest sports medicine society in the world) followed by 2 more terms as Secretary/Treasurer (2016-19). I was selected to be a team physician for USA Track and Field for the 2007 Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil followed by a selection to be a team physician for the USA Paralympic team in Beijing, China in 2008. I am currently a member of the NCAA Committee on Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sport.
I have been blessed with the many opportunities that my UNR education has provided me, and I look forward to many more in the future.

Favorite quote:" To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special." --Jim Valvano
