I choose to come to Reno for both residency and fellowship because this program nurtures a sense of community and respects that we are humans more than just employees. Our program allows for a balance between work and life. I can be both a doctor during the day and a mom of two kids when not at work. Reno has a great selection of activities both indoor and out, and our job allows enough time off to actually enjoy being part of this engaging city. Our program has opportunities for research and publishing, and we choose if we participate rather than being required. I feel having a choice leads to better research verses publishing just for the sake of publishing. On the practical side of why UNR was my first choice for residency and fellowship, are considerations like no duty hour violations which ensures we are rested enough to be good doctors and excellent health insurance which ensures we take care of our own health in order to be good doctors. There are also options to begin moonlighting during the second year which provides both additional income and increased autonym and learning. If I could go back through the MATCH again, I would still choose UNR as my first choice for residency and fellowship mainly because I feel that I am receiving excellent training in psychiatry.

I chose UNR as my top program because of the cohesive and friendly culture of residents. They are inclusive and always have your back. Secondly, this program has amazing staff, faculty, and facilities. They give you an opportunity to work at a VA, State, and private hospital which gives you an array and diversity of patients and workflows. Lastly, geographically, Reno is amazing for nature, hikes, sunshine, biking, beaches with Tahoe and surrounding lakes nearby.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:While the great outdoor scene in Reno and Tahoe was the initial draw for me to begin my training in Reno, it was the overall fantastic experience during my interview day that really sealed the deal. I knew right away that the residents and faculty were exactly the type of people I wanted to work with on a daily basis. The robust sports medicine program with the fellowship training was also a deciding factor in my decision to train at UNR.

    • Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine

    • Career Goals: To practice full spectrum family medicine in a rural mountain or beach community, combining hospitalist and emergency medicine with outpatient care.
    • Hobbies: I enjoy any activity in nature but especially rock climbing, skiing/snowboarding, hiking, and surfing.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Over and over, each program stressed the importance of “fit” and it was not until UNR that I truly understood what that meant. This obscure term came to represent an ease of conversation, common passions and a sense of belonging in a group of residents and faculty whom I had just met. Having spent most of my life in the Lake Tahoe area, returning to Reno felt like coming home to my favorite outdoor playground. The program also has so much to offer- community based in a university setting, unopposed in Emergency medicine and OB/GYN, rural, wilderness and sports medicine experiences with the added opportunity for a Master’s in Public Health.

    • Hobbies: I love to be outside- hiking, running, skiing or paddle boarding up at Lake Tahoe! I also love to spend time with my family and friends. My husband and I have a pretty serious case of wanderlust and want to continue exploring the world. Other than that, you could find me sitting down with a good book or dabbling with some watercolor paints.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:My husband and I met during our undergraduate careers while volunteering at the School of Medicine. We left Reno to attend medical school together at St. George’s University- which was an amazing adventure that allowed us to study abroad and in a variety of locations throughout the United States. But after being away from home for so many years, we knew that coming back to our families and community was next in our journey. During our interview, we reconnected with faculty and residents that we had known from our undergraduate careers- and it truly felt like coming home for us. The entire UNR FMR team was welcoming, friendly and kind. The warmth we felt from the entire team coupled with our love for Nevada is why we chose UNR FMR for our budding careers as Family Medicine Physicians.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Nevada has always been my home and even when life has taken my wife and I elsewhere, I long for the mountains, sagebrush and untamed wilderness that make up this truly diverse yet unique state. It also just so happens that I met my wife – who is now also a family medicine physician - while volunteering at a medical clinic in Reno, so it should come as no surprise that we would want to make our home where our story began! During our medical school training we saw many different family medicine programs; learned what would allow us to excel and provide excellent care; and, always found ourselves looking at Reno as the perfect place to be. Extensive training running the full gamut of medicine was high on our list for a residency program, as we both desire the ability to take care of anyone, in any situation; however, it was also important to be learning alongside faculty physicians and senior residents whom we could really enjoy our time with – after all, the field of family medicine is just as much about lifelong medical care as it is about cherishing the bonds we have with others.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a few major factors that influenced my decision. First, I’ve been trying to get back home to Northern California for about 5 years, and Reno was almost home. But Reno in and of itself is a fantastic place to live. I’m so excited to have access to Lake Tahoe, skiing, hiking and biking trails, in addition to the developing art and restaurant culture here. But what really stood out to me about this program was how tightly knit the group is. The residents were all very close with each other, but also have a strong bond with many of the attendings. That’s not something I saw in other programs. I knew I wanted to train where I would have the support and friendship of my colleagues, and I know I’ve found that here!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency was my first choice for me. Asides from one of the best interviews of the season, I have heard many great things about the Family residency program while my stay at Reno during my third-year clinical rotations. I did a total of 18 weeks rotation at Renown Regional Medical Center, and I had the opportunity to explore the program at close. Therefore, I am honored that the program accepted me. I am deeply passionate about being a family medicine physician in rural areas, as my upbringing was in a village in the Northern parts of Pakistan in a small rural community. During my clinical rotations, I worked with healthcare professional whom I found dedicated to teaching and providing quality care. I loved the exposure and experiences working with a diverse population of health care professionals during my clinical rotation. I found the health care workers respectful & grateful for the services. These are some of the reasons why I choose this program. I am ambitious to pursue further medical education in the field of family medicine and I know that UNR Family Residency Program will help guide me through this process. Lastly, Reno and Elko are beautiful cities with an atmosphere and environment that I can see myself living and raising a family in the future.

Second, throughout medical school I had the opportunity to work very closely with the Family Medicine faculty starting in my first year--and there is no better group of people in any program anywhere! The residents and faculty here are my people, everyone is happy and the education here is excellent. For these reasons and many more, it was clear that this program was our number one choice.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose the Family Medicine Residency at UNR because it was a great fit for me. I grew up in Reno and looked forward to moving back to be closer to my family and all the opportunities for outdoor recreation in the area. On my interview day, I found everyone involved in the program to be genuine, kind, and supportive. I was particularly struck by the strength of the training in pediatrics and obstetrics as well as the abundance of procedural training opportunities. As someone who wants to keep obstetrics in my practice, I am so happy to work with certified nurse midwives, family medicine physicians, and OB/GYNs in caring for pregnant and laboring women. Learning about the job offers that graduating residents were receiving made it clear that the program supports residents in pursuing training opportunities for their individual career goals and develops well-rounded physicians that the community respects.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were many reasons that I chose this program. My husband and I moved to Reno in 2015 for me to start medical school. Rock climbing has been a driving factor in our lives for 20 years, and it is no coincidence that we chose to live within short drives of Tahoe, Bishop and Yosemite. In fact, Reno is a great place for all the yuppie activities, including running, mountain biking, etc... and we have enjoyed these with good friends over the last four years. Having gone to med school in Reno, I worked closely with this program's residents and faculty during third and fourth years. I have always enjoyed their sense of community, and have had great respect for their professional skills. This program has an excellent reputation among the Reno medical community. That there is a sports medicine fellowship here in Reno is a big bonus for me!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a lot of great reasons for me to choose this program. I was initially drawn to apply here because of the great outdoor access and my desire to move out west again; however, after interviewing I was blown away by the friendliness of the residents and faculty. UNR family med strikes a great balance between the resources of a larger academic institution and a smaller community feel that allows family docs to practice cradle to grave medicine. All the residents are eager to learn and always willing to help and teach! I couldn’t be happier with my choice to be here in Reno.

    • Career Goals: Currently I think I want to focus on outpatient primary care. However, I enjoy variety, therefore I imagine I might end up doing more than just outpatient primary care.
    • Hobbies: I enjoy outdoor activities in particular snowboarding and hiking. I watch too much football and I like to travel whenever time permits.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Having spent my entire life in Western New York I knew I wanted to go to a different part of the country for at least residency. What really made UNR stand out to me was the friendly and approachable attending and resident physicians. At the end of my interview season I felt very confident UNR would provide a great environment to learn in. Lastly, the diversity of the UNR program brought it to the top of my list. The attending physicians work with the residents in a variety of settings, giving the program a community full-spectrum feel. However, at the same time the program is supported by a large university, allowing residents to also obtain and pursue any academic interest.

    • Career Goals: I plan on doing primary care sports medicine. Although sports are my passion, my wife and I both grew up in small towns, and practicing full-scope rural medicine is definitely something I’m interested in as well.
    • Hobbies: Nothing is better than spending time with my wife, son, and our families. I love to play all sports, but basketball is king. I enjoy lifting weights and I have a goal to start training for triathlons. We love food in my family. I recently bought a smoker and want to master the art of smoking brisket, ribs, and other meats.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? My interview experience here is really what sold me. It was obvious that the residents have a great sense of comradery, not only with each other but with the faculty as well. It seemed like such a comfortable place to be where people support each other and make each other better. My wife grew up close to Reno and being close to family is important to us. We love the area and think it would be a great place to raise our children. I know this residency will train me well for full-scope practice, and it has a strong sports medicine fellowship as well.

    • Hobbies: Reading, writing short stories, backpacking, salsa dancing, piano.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? During the interview process, UNR FMR stuck out as a program where I could get the best and broadest training in family medicine, with the added benefits of being part of a university. Participating in the couples match opened the possibility that my husband and I would be drawn to different programs; we found in Reno, however, the combination of a small town feel with a larger population size and we both love the outdoors. It was important to us that we have ample OB/GYN training, sports medicine experience and a faculty invested in seeing the residents succeed. We found all of this at UNR as well as a group of residents who felt like people we would want to work with and build lasting friendships.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Reno has always been on my radar since my undergrad time in the Bay Area for various reasons but most of all the fun family trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno local casinos. Location with varied seasons added extra strengths when it came time for residency application. However, what solidified my commitment to the Reno Family Medicine program was really the experience during the interview. The program portrayed perfect combination between sufficient guidance from staff and adequate autonomy for residents to be independently competent. The bonds and interactions between current residents feel nothing less than being part of a family. I actually felt a sense of belonging even during the interviews and tours. On top of that, the academia with new innovations involving the options of MD/MPH or MD/MBA programs, AND the Elko program, only sealed the deal in my mind that this program is the one to be with. As if that wasn’t enough, this program is constantly growing, despite that fact that they have been around for decades and their alumni are in leadership positions. Medicine is an ever-evolving field and the best place to learn medicine is to be in a program with SOLID PROVEN RECORDS of producing successful physicians.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose UNR for many reasons. Growing up in Auburn, CA the Reno/Tahoe area is like a second home to me. The program offers each resident to become trained in full spectrum family medicine-with unique experiences in OB, peds and Sports Medicine. I also liked that the program was transparent in the structure, requirements and expectations of residents during residency. I was also intrigued by the combined residency/masters programs offered through UNR.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I made the switch to Family Medicine late in medical school and one of the main reasons was my experience with the Reno residents. I get along with everyone well and it’s a great learning environment. The faculty are extremely supportive of all of my educational goals. Additionally, I enjoy working with medical students and knew that there would be many opportunities here. I grew up in Lake Tahoe and wanted to remain in Nevada as my husband and I both love it here. There is so much to do, whether you like festivals, concerts, trying local breweries, or outdoor activities; plus there is an airport in town, which makes traveling that much easier!
