Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Over and over, each program stressed the importance of “fit” and it was not until UNR that I truly understood what that meant. This obscure term came to represent an ease of conversation, common passions and a sense of belonging in a group of residents and faculty whom I had just met. Having spent most of my life in the Lake Tahoe area, returning to Reno felt like coming home to my favorite outdoor playground. The program also has so much to offer- community based in a university setting, unopposed in Emergency medicine and OB/GYN, rural, wilderness and sports medicine experiences with the added opportunity for a Master’s in Public Health.

My husband and I have a pretty serious case of wanderlust and want to continue exploring the world. Other than that, you could find me sitting down with a good book or dabbling with some watercolor paints.
Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:My husband and I met during our undergraduate careers while volunteering at the School of Medicine. We left Reno to attend medical school together at St. George’s University- which was an amazing adventure that allowed us to study abroad and in a variety of locations throughout the United States. But after being away from home for so many years, we knew that coming back to our families and community was next in our journey. During our interview, we reconnected with faculty and residents that we had known from our undergraduate careers- and it truly felt like coming home for us. The entire UNR FMR team was welcoming, friendly and kind. The warmth we felt from the entire team coupled with our love for Nevada is why we chose UNR FMR for our budding careers as Family Medicine Physicians.

From rural training to wilderness and community medicine--there is no shortage of opportunities. There is also no shortage of kind, passionate, and inspiring staff, faculty, and fellow residents that seem eager to teach and want you to succeed. Living in the Eastern Sierras, certainly sets this place apart from the rest—actually, there was no comparison. Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Nevada has always been my home and even when life has taken my wife and I elsewhere, I long for the mountains, sagebrush and untamed wilderness that make up this truly diverse yet unique state. It also just so happens that I met my wife – who is now also a family medicine physician - while volunteering at a medical clinic in Reno, so it should come as no surprise that we would want to make our home where our story began! During our medical school training we saw many different family medicine programs; learned what would allow us to excel and provide excellent care; and, always found ourselves looking at Reno as the perfect place to be. Extensive training running the full gamut of medicine was high on our list for a residency program, as we both desire the ability to take care of anyone, in any situation; however, it was also important to be learning alongside faculty physicians and senior residents whom we could really enjoy our time with – after all, the field of family medicine is just as much about lifelong medical care as it is about cherishing the bonds we have with others.

Asides from one of the best interviews of the season, I have heard many great things about the Family residency program while my stay at Reno during my third-year clinical rotations. I did a total of 18 weeks rotation at Renown Regional Medical Center, and I had the opportunity to explore the program at close. Therefore, I am honored that the program accepted me. During my clinical rotations, I worked with healthcare professional whom I found dedicated to teaching and providing quality care. I loved the exposure and experiences working with a diverse population of health care professionals during my clinical rotation. I found the health care workers respectful & grateful for the services. These are some of the reasons why I choose this program. Upon visiting this program, it was abundantly clear that this was a resident-focused program. Every resident I spoke with held the program with high regard and felt that they were cared for and listened to. Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were many reasons that I chose this program. My husband and I moved to Reno in 2015 for me to start medical school. Rock climbing has been a driving factor in our lives for 20 years, and it is no coincidence that we chose to live within short drives of Tahoe, Bishop and Yosemite. In fact, Reno is a great place for all the yuppie activities, including running, mountain biking, etc... and we have enjoyed these with good friends over the last four years. Having gone to med school in Reno, I worked closely with this program's residents and faculty during third and fourth years. I have always enjoyed their sense of community, and have had great respect for their professional skills. This program has an excellent reputation among the Reno medical community. That there is a sports medicine fellowship here in Reno is a big bonus for me!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a lot of great reasons for me to choose this program. I was initially drawn to apply here because of the great outdoor access and my desire to move out west again; however, after interviewing I was blown away by the friendliness of the residents and faculty. UNR family med strikes a great balance between the resources of a larger academic institution and a smaller community feel that allows family docs to practice cradle to grave medicine. All the residents are eager to learn and always willing to help and teach! I couldn’t be happier with my choice to be here in Reno.

- Career Goals: I plan on doing primary care sports medicine. Although sports are my passion, my wife and I both grew up in small towns, and practicing full-scope rural medicine is definitely something I’m interested in as well.
- Hobbies: Nothing is better than spending time with my wife, son, and our families. I love to play all sports, but basketball is king. I enjoy lifting weights and I have a goal to start training for triathlons. We love food in my family. I recently bought a smoker and want to master the art of smoking brisket, ribs, and other meats.
Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? My interview experience here is really what sold me. It was obvious that the residents have a great sense of comradery, not only with each other but with the faculty as well. It seemed like such a comfortable place to be where people support each other and make each other better. My wife grew up close to Reno and being close to family is important to us. We love the area and think it would be a great place to raise our children. I know this residency will train me well for full-scope practice, and it has a strong sports medicine fellowship as well.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:I was first introduced to the program while attending the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) National Conference. I felt like I immediately connected with the residents and faculty during that event. It was energizing to learn about the opportunities residents have to develop their knowledge and skills as quality family physicians while simultaneously being supported in the exploration of their own academic and clinical interests. I love the program’s proximity to Lake Tahoe and the 250+ sunny days a year in Reno.

I chose UNR because I wanted to learn the practice of psychiatry in public, private, and VA hospitals. I also liked the opportunity to pursue a child and adolescent fellowship integrated into the residency program. I've noticed faculty are always a phone call or text away and always available to talk; they really care about the residents. Lastly, my family has loved living in a beautiful area with plenty of year-round outdoor recreation!
