Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There are several reasons I chose UNR for fellowship training. First and foremost, it’s because of the faculty and subsequent wealth of knowledge and expertise that surrounds the program, ultimately providing the foundation of my training. The program director is fellowship trained in sports medicine and additionally is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. This passion for wilderness medicine translates into incredibly unique training experiences outside the standard curriculum such as high-altitude medicine, diving medicine (with scuba certification), rodeo coverage and 6 weeks of ski coverage at Lake Tahoe’s Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows. Further, the associate program director is not only nationally recognized as a leader within the sports medicine community and NCAA, but authored the primary care sports medicine and ultrasound curriculums. Additionally, I have one-on-one didactics with one of the original cardiologists whose research lead to the current consensus statement on international criteria for electrocardiographic interpretation in athletes. I also work with a PCSM physician who specializes in occupational medicine, with decades of experiencing and a wealth of knowledge to further augment my training. Moreover, UNR fellows provide unopposed healthcare and management to a broad spectrum of high-level Division 1 athletes. It’s an honor and privilege to be one of the 2019-2020 sports medicine fellows at the University of Nevada, Reno, and look forward to continuing their tradition of medical excellence and furthering advancements in modern medicine.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Over and over, each program stressed the importance of “fit” and it was not until UNR that I truly understood what that meant. This obscure term came to represent an ease of conversation, common passions and a sense of belonging in a group of residents and faculty whom I had just met. Having spent most of my life in the Lake Tahoe area, returning to Reno felt like coming home to my favorite outdoor playground. The program also has so much to offer- community based in a university setting, unopposed in Emergency medicine and OB/GYN, rural, wilderness and sports medicine experiences with the added opportunity for a Master’s in Public Health.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a few major factors that influenced my decision. First, I’ve been trying to get back home to Northern California for about 5 years, and Reno was almost home. But Reno in and of itself is a fantastic place to live. I’m so excited to have access to Lake Tahoe, skiing, hiking and biking trails, in addition to the developing art and restaurant culture here. But what really stood out to me about this program was how tightly knit the group is. The residents were all very close with each other, but also have a strong bond with many of the attendings. That’s not something I saw in other programs. I knew I wanted to train where I would have the support and friendship of my colleagues, and I know I’ve found that here!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency was my first choice for me. Asides from one of the best interviews of the season, I have heard many great things about the Family residency program while my stay at Reno during my third-year clinical rotations. I did a total of 18 weeks rotation at Renown Regional Medical Center, and I had the opportunity to explore the program at close. Therefore, I am honored that the program accepted me. I am deeply passionate about being a family medicine physician in rural areas, as my upbringing was in a village in the Northern parts of Pakistan in a small rural community. During my clinical rotations, I worked with healthcare professional whom I found dedicated to teaching and providing quality care. I loved the exposure and experiences working with a diverse population of health care professionals during my clinical rotation. I found the health care workers respectful & grateful for the services. These are some of the reasons why I choose this program. I am ambitious to pursue further medical education in the field of family medicine and I know that UNR Family Residency Program will help guide me through this process. Lastly, Reno and Elko are beautiful cities with an atmosphere and environment that I can see myself living and raising a family in the future.

The residents and faculty here are my people, everyone is happy and the education here is excellent. For these reasons and many more, it was clear that this program was our number one choice.

    Ashley JonesAshley Jones M.D. (PGY2)

    • Medical School: University of Arizona, College of Medicine Phoenix
    • Undergraduate College: University of Oklahoma
    • Career Goals: I aspire to practice full-spectrum Family Medicine including obstetrics in rural and underserved communities.
    • Hobbies: I find free time is best spent outdoors and with family. My husband and I get out on our mountain or road bikes as often as we can, occasionally letting our dog tag along on the trails. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and skiing. I love gardening and find so much satisfaction in growing my own food. During my downtime, I might be found cooking, listening to podcasts, reading, or spending way too much time solving crosswords.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose the Family Medicine Residency at UNR because it was a great fit for me. I grew up in Reno and looked forward to moving back to be closer to my family and all the opportunities for outdoor recreation in the area. On my interview day, I found everyone involved in the program to be genuine, kind, and supportive. I was particularly struck by the strength of the training in pediatrics and obstetrics as well as the abundance of procedural training opportunities. As someone who wants to keep obstetrics in my practice, I am so happy to work with certified nurse midwives, family medicine physicians, and OB/GYNs in caring for pregnant and laboring women. Learning about the job offers that graduating residents were receiving made it clear that the program supports residents in pursuing training opportunities for their individual career goals and develops well-rounded physicians that the community respects.

We immediately felt welcomed when we came to visit Reno and are overjoyed to have matched here. I felt UNR had the best of both worlds in a Family Medicine program with both full scope training as well as the support of an academic institution. UNR’s strengths in Obstetrics, Wilderness medicine and Sports medicine were important to me. I am also interested in different forms of healthcare delivery and would like to work to improve access and reduce the costs associated with healthcare. We love the outdoors and having the Sierras and Tahoe in our backyard was definitely a bonus.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I was born and raised in Ohio but every winter my family took a ski trip to Lake Tahoe. I fell in love with Tahoe’s beauty and the endless outdoor activities. I initially applied to UNR because of its proximity to Lake Tahoe but after interviewing, I knew it was the perfect fit. I was blown away by the residents, staff, and faculty. They have created an exceptional full-spectrum family medicine training program with a friendly laid-back atmosphere. Another important factor in my decision was UNR’s sports medicine program. They have outstanding sports medicine faculty and provide residents with many high level training opportunities.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I wanted a residency program that provided a strong foundation of full spectrum medicine while I embarked on my journey of becoming a well-trained and talented physician. I grew up in a very small town near Santa Barbara, California so I find it important to develop meaningful long-term relationships with my patients, especially with those in rural and underserved populations, and this is exactly what the program provides. This residency program pays particular attention to my specific goals and provides the necessary grounds to attain more clinical experience in that area. Most importantly, what really attracted me to this program was the welcoming nature of the residents and faculty. Everyone makes you feel right at home!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were many reasons that I chose this program. My husband and I moved to Reno in 2015 for me to start medical school. Rock climbing has been a driving factor in our lives for 20 years, and it is no coincidence that we chose to live within short drives of Tahoe, Bishop and Yosemite. In fact, Reno is a great place for all the yuppie activities, including running, mountain biking, etc... and we have enjoyed these with good friends over the last four years. Having gone to med school in Reno, I worked closely with this program's residents and faculty during third and fourth years. I have always enjoyed their sense of community, and have had great respect for their professional skills. This program has an excellent reputation among the Reno medical community. That there is a sports medicine fellowship here in Reno is a big bonus for me!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a lot of great reasons for me to choose this program. I was initially drawn to apply here because of the great outdoor access and my desire to move out west again; however, after interviewing I was blown away by the friendliness of the residents and faculty. UNR family med strikes a great balance between the resources of a larger academic institution and a smaller community feel that allows family docs to practice cradle to grave medicine. All the residents are eager to learn and always willing to help and teach! I couldn’t be happier with my choice to be here in Reno.

    • Hobbies: I enjoy outdoor activities in particular snowboarding and hiking. I watch too much football and I like to travel whenever time permits.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Having spent my entire life in Western New York I knew I wanted to go to a different part of the country for at least residency. What really made UNR stand out to me was the friendly and approachable attending and resident physicians. At the end of my interview season I felt very confident UNR would provide a great environment to learn in. Lastly, the diversity of the UNR program brought it to the top of my list. The attending physicians work with the residents in a variety of settings, giving the program a community full-spectrum feel. However, at the same time the program is supported by a large university, allowing residents to also obtain and pursue any academic interest.

    • Career Goals: I have lots of interests and with them lots of goals. I love the Latino community and am really interested in helping these great people meet their healthcare and wellness needs. I would love to do lots of continuity obstetrics and pediatrics. Finally, along with my love of the outdoors comes the goal of trying to find a way to combine it with medicine. I would love to be involved in wilderness medicine, whether through education, search and rescue, or some form of expedition medicine.
    • Hobbies: Playing with my family, hiking, climbing, running, skiing, backpacking, reading, cooking, painting, answering my daughter’s endless questions and reminding her what she cannot put in her baby brother’s mouth.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? First and foremost, UNR Family medicine was on our radar because of the location by the mountains and the average days of sun each year. However, my wife and I decided without reservation that it was our number one program because of the vibe from the people here. We heard about how happy many residents were, the resident driven changes, the supportive collegial faculty and were really impressed. We also feel that the big/little city nestled against the mountains is just the right kind of place for us to raise our kids.

    • Career Goals: I plan on doing primary care sports medicine. Although sports are my passion, my wife and I both grew up in small towns, and practicing full-scope rural medicine is definitely something I’m interested in as well.
    • Hobbies: Nothing is better than spending time with my wife, son, and our families. I love to play all sports, but basketball is king. I enjoy lifting weights and I have a goal to start training for triathlons. We love food in my family. I recently bought a smoker and want to master the art of smoking brisket, ribs, and other meats.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? My interview experience here is really what sold me. It was obvious that the residents have a great sense of comradery, not only with each other but with the faculty as well. It seemed like such a comfortable place to be where people support each other and make each other better. My wife grew up close to Reno and being close to family is important to us. We love the area and think it would be a great place to raise our children. I know this residency will train me well for full-scope practice, and it has a strong sports medicine fellowship as well.

    • Hobbies: Reading, writing short stories, backpacking, salsa dancing, piano.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? During the interview process, UNR FMR stuck out as a program where I could get the best and broadest training in family medicine, with the added benefits of being part of a university. Participating in the couples match opened the possibility that my husband and I would be drawn to different programs; we found in Reno, however, the combination of a small town feel with a larger population size and we both love the outdoors. It was important to us that we have ample OB/GYN training, sports medicine experience and a faculty invested in seeing the residents succeed. We found all of this at UNR as well as a group of residents who felt like people we would want to work with and build lasting friendships.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Reno has always been on my radar since my undergrad time in the Bay Area for various reasons but most of all the fun family trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno local casinos. Location with varied seasons added extra strengths when it came time for residency application. However, what solidified my commitment to the Reno Family Medicine program was really the experience during the interview. The program portrayed perfect combination between sufficient guidance from staff and adequate autonomy for residents to be independently competent. The bonds and interactions between current residents feel nothing less than being part of a family. I actually felt a sense of belonging even during the interviews and tours. On top of that, the academia with new innovations involving the options of MD/MPH or MD/MBA programs, AND the Elko program, only sealed the deal in my mind that this program is the one to be with. As if that wasn’t enough, this program is constantly growing, despite that fact that they have been around for decades and their alumni are in leadership positions. Medicine is an ever-evolving field and the best place to learn medicine is to be in a program with SOLID PROVEN RECORDS of producing successful physicians.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose UNR for many reasons. Growing up in Auburn, CA the Reno/Tahoe area is like a second home to me. The program offers each resident to become trained in full spectrum family medicine-with unique experiences in OB, peds and Sports Medicine. I also liked that the program was transparent in the structure, requirements and expectations of residents during residency. I was also intrigued by the combined residency/masters programs offered through UNR.

I am also a self-professed crazy cat lady and will talk about my pets to anyone who will listen.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I made the switch to Family Medicine late in medical school and one of the main reasons was my experience with the Reno residents. I get along with everyone well and it’s a great learning environment. The faculty are extremely supportive of all of my educational goals. Additionally, I enjoy working with medical students and knew that there would be many opportunities here. I grew up in Lake Tahoe and wanted to remain in Nevada as my husband and I both love it here. There is so much to do, whether you like festivals, concerts, trying local breweries, or outdoor activities; plus there is an airport in town, which makes traveling that much easier! I feel extremely lucky to have been chosen by such an awesome program.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? The biggest draw to this program for me is it’s unparalleled faculty, who enjoy teaching. As someone who enjoys the outdoors and learning this fellowship is the perfect fit for me. One major thing that drew me to this program was the opportunity to learn some unique types of sports medicine. I’m most excited about the 6 weeks of ski medicine, 1 month scuba rotation, learning about and being involved in wilderness medicine courses, and lastly working with rodeo athletes. The variety of event coverage we actively participate in, and the depth of knowledge I am able to receive from the faculty is exceptional. As a fellow, I will have the unique opportunity to learn about reading ECG specifically related to an athletes from one of the pioneers in the field. As someone who enjoys an active lifestyle, I understand the frustrations that come from injuries on and off the field. I am excited to learn from the best as well as be one of the lead physicians to division one level athletes of a variety of teams.
