I realized UNR FM provided endless opportunities for training, while serving the most vulnerable populations in the area. Reno is a terrific place for me to blend my passion for public health and primary care and to serve low-income communities. As a Latina, I am also incredibly passionate about serving the growing Latino community in Reno and working to meet their cultural and language needs. Lastly, Reno has such lovely people and the most stunning outdoors.

My attraction to the UNR Family Medicine Residency began with the exceptional sports and wilderness medicine training offered. I was certain this program was the place I wanted to be after interviewing. I felt immediately at home and comfortable, and discovered so much more about the people and the program. The Reno area and access to all of the outdoor activities is also a treasure.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency?I chose this program for a lot of different reasons. I found the pediatric experience to be unique compared to many other family medicine programs in that we have such a large volume of pediatric patients that I felt doing my residency here would make me exceptionally prepared to care for children in my future practice. I also found the different backgrounds of the attendings and other residents to be an important part of my decision because I would be able to learn a lot from the people I saw and worked with every day. Plus, Reno is home to me and I see myself practicing here in the future. It made a lot of sense to me to train where I would like to practice so I will have a good handle on the resources available for my patients.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose this fellowship because I am seen as the main team-physician for a NCAA Division I university and have the opportunity to work unimpeded with athletes, trainers, and coaches. This sports fellowship is unique in that it offers scuba certification and 6 weeks of ski medicine (at 2 local ski resorts) as part of the program curriculum and has many opportunities to be involved with wilderness medicine courses, rodeo athletes, and ultra-marathon athletes. The program boasts a fellowship director who, as the former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society, is involved with high altitude medicine and opportunities in Nepal and other areas near Mt Everest base camp. I have the opportunity to work with a renowned sports medicine physician and current AMSSM board member, who created the sports fellowship curriculum, ultrasound fellowship curriculum, and teaches ultrasound at the annual Sports Fellowship conference. I work directly with one of the cardiology pioneers of the athlete ECG which lead to the Seattle Criteria. I have access to a host of dedicated community practitioners. My family medicine continuity clinic and sport medicine clinic are on campus and literally a football stadium walking distance from each other. I have come to love the Reno area with the variety of out-door activities that it offers; including camping, mountain biking, ski resorts and Lake Tahoe; all just a short drive away.

    • Hobbies: Rafting, hiking, hoop dance, acro yoga, dancing, singing, and most importantly hanging out with my dog!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a few major factors that influenced my decision. First, I’ve been trying to get back home to Northern California for about 5 years, and Reno was almost home. But Reno in and of itself is a fantastic place to live. I’m so excited to have access to Lake Tahoe, skiing, hiking and biking trails, in addition to the developing art and restaurant culture here. But what really stood out to me about this program was how tightly knit the group is. The residents were all very close with each other, but also have a strong bond with many of the attendings. That’s not something I saw in other programs. I knew I wanted to train where I would have the support and friendship of my colleagues, and I know I’ve found that here!

Second, throughout medical school I had the opportunity to work very closely with the Family Medicine faculty starting in my first year--and there is no better group of people in any program anywhere! The residents and faculty here are my people, everyone is happy and the education here is excellent. For these reasons and many more, it was clear that this program was our number one choice.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose the Family Medicine Residency at UNR because it was a great fit for me. I grew up in Reno and looked forward to moving back to be closer to my family and all the opportunities for outdoor recreation in the area. On my interview day, I found everyone involved in the program to be genuine, kind, and supportive. I was particularly struck by the strength of the training in pediatrics and obstetrics as well as the abundance of procedural training opportunities. As someone who wants to keep obstetrics in my practice, I am so happy to work with certified nurse midwives, family medicine physicians, and OB/GYNs in caring for pregnant and laboring women. Learning about the job offers that graduating residents were receiving made it clear that the program supports residents in pursuing training opportunities for their individual career goals and develops well-rounded physicians that the community respects.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? My wife and I couples’ matched and for us, a good fit with faculty, staff and residents was a must. We immediately felt welcomed when we came to visit Reno and are overjoyed to have matched here. I felt UNR had the best of both worlds in a Family Medicine program with both full scope training as well as the support of an academic institution. UNR’s strengths in Obstetrics, Wilderness medicine and Sports medicine were important to me. I am also interested in different forms of healthcare delivery and would like to work to improve access and reduce the costs associated with healthcare. We love the outdoors and having the Sierras and Tahoe in our backyard was definitely a bonus.

    • Career Goals: I hope to return to the rural community in which I was born to practice full spectrum, cradle to grave, rural family medicine. Home visits are a must! Remaining actively engaged in the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is also very important to me; I enjoy teaching and would love to integrate medical student and resident education into my future practice. Lastly, I see wilderness medicine as the perfect coalescence of my love of rural medicine and the outdoors and thus aim to weave wilderness medicine into my residency training and career.
    • Hobbies: Growing up in rural northern California in the Sierra Nevadas, a mountain to explore or a pristine lake to dip in was out my back door. Consequently, my happiness and wellbeing are directly related to the outdoor landscape in which I live. Backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, backpacking, and camping are a few of my favorite activities. I also enjoy playing any rec league sport, gardening, cooking and spending as much time as possible with my family.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency? The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency Program is defined by a culture of camaraderie and excellence in educating both residents and medical students. Having the privilege of working with the faculty my first-fourth years of medical school provided an intimate understanding of how the department creates a supportive and positive learning environment. It is not surprising the medical students have voted the program as the “Outstanding Clinical Department” for over a decade. The faculty and staff are approachable, passionate and extremely dedicated to teaching. Beyond the people, the program’s curriculum and educational opportunities in inpatient, OB, wilderness and sports medicine will prepare me well for a rural practice. Additionally, the pediatric and newborn experience surpasses that of all other programs at which I interviewed. Lastly, the location, nestled against the mountains, makes this program a perfect fit for me.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I chose the University of Nevada[, Reno] School of Medicine because of the cohesive group of senior residents who I interacted with on a consistent basis as a medical student. This residency felt like I was joining a family and that I would have all the support I could possibly need to make the transition from student to physician. I also really like the significant inpatient pediatric training that we get in this residency. I feel that this experience is unique to Reno and not something that was common during my interviews at other schools. Finally I love the Reno-Tahoe area. There are a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities within 30 minutes in all directions. There are not many other places that I would rather call home.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? The Reno Family Medicine Residency really impressed me during my interview with their program. It is a very respected residency and the preceptors seem to really enjoy working with residents. The program’s community and population health focus, as well as its close ties with the Sports Medicine fellowship is also intriguing. I know that my education in family medicine will flourish in such a remarkable area! In addition, the location of the residency couldn’t be better (I will be close to family, both in Idaho and California).

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I chose the UNR Med Family Medicine Residency for many reasons but mainly because of the great attendings, residents and staff. I had the opportunity to work with many of them during medical school and was impressed with the caring, supportive and positive environment of this program. There is a great sense of camaraderie and desire to see everyone succeed. I also knew that I would receive an outstanding education and benefit from the diverse clinical experiences of the attending physicians. Finally, this program would also allow me to remain in Reno close to family and friends while training and serving the population I hope to work with after completing residency.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I was born and raised in Ohio but every winter my family took a ski trip to Lake Tahoe. I fell in love with Tahoe’s beauty and the endless outdoor activities. I initially applied to UNR because of its proximity to Lake Tahoe but after interviewing, I knew it was the perfect fit. I was blown away by the residents, staff, and faculty. They have created an exceptional full-spectrum family medicine training program with a friendly laid-back atmosphere. Another important factor in my decision was UNR’s sports medicine program. They have outstanding sports medicine faculty and provide residents with many high level training opportunities.

    • Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with friends and family, traveling, hot yoga, decorating, I love cooking but I’m a terrible baker.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I wanted a residency program that provided a strong foundation of full spectrum medicine while I embarked on my journey of becoming a well-trained and talented physician. I grew up in a very small town near Santa Barbara, California so I find it important to develop meaningful long-term relationships with my patients, especially with those in rural and underserved populations, and this is exactly what the program provides. This residency program pays particular attention to my specific goals and provides the necessary grounds to attain more clinical experience in that area. Most importantly, what really attracted me to this program was the welcoming nature of the residents and faculty. Everyone makes you feel right at home!

    • Hobbies: I enjoy outdoor activities in particular snowboarding and hiking. I watch too much football and I like to travel whenever time permits.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Having spent my entire life in Western New York I knew I wanted to go to a different part of the country for at least residency. What really made UNR stand out to me was the friendly and approachable attending and resident physicians. At the end of my interview season I felt very confident UNR would provide a great environment to learn in. Lastly, the diversity of the UNR program brought it to the top of my list. The attending physicians work with the residents in a variety of settings, giving the program a community full-spectrum feel. However, at the same time the program is supported by a large university, allowing residents to also obtain and pursue any academic interest.

    • Career Goals: I have lots of interests and with them lots of goals. I love the Latino community and am really interested in helping these great people meet their healthcare and wellness needs. I would love to do lots of continuity obstetrics and pediatrics. Finally, along with my love of the outdoors comes the goal of trying to find a way to combine it with medicine. I would love to be involved in wilderness medicine, whether through education, search and rescue, or some form of expedition medicine.
    • Hobbies: Playing with my family, hiking, climbing, running, skiing, backpacking, reading, cooking, painting, answering my daughter’s endless questions and reminding her what she cannot put in her baby brother’s mouth.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? First and foremost, UNR Family medicine was on our radar because of the location by the mountains and the average days of sun each year. However, my wife and I decided without reservation that it was our number one program because of the vibe from the people here. We heard about how happy many residents were, the resident driven changes, the supportive collegial faculty and were really impressed. We also feel that the big/little city nestled against the mountains is just the right kind of place for us to raise our kids.

    • Career Goals: I see myself moving into academic medicine at some point because I really enjoy working with students and love the combination of hospital and clinic work. Some of my favorite areas of medicine are the primary care of women, rational health screening, lactation support and care of the geriatric population. I hope to revive the home visit. I really enjoy emergency medicine and would like to spend some time in the rural hospitals in Northern Nevada doing that. I have a special interest in wilderness and high altitude medicine, having worked in helicopter EMS for a long time and also having been a rock, ice and mountain climber for many years. My pipe dream is to be the base camp doctor for a mountaineering expedition in the Karakoram.
    • Hobbies: I love the mountains around here so I hike them as often as I can. I enjoy Lake Tahoe anywhere near, on, or in the water. I’m a really awful runner but I do it anyways. My husband Jon, my son Ryan and I have weekly Monopoly games, which are cutthroat, loud, and sometimes played for real money bets. We also enjoy playing golf. We have a golden retriever couch potato named Brodie who can usually be found asleep in a lap. I’ve been in a book club with the same women for 16 years now. Thanks to my Bay-area raised husband we are 49er and Giants fans. My son is becoming an accomplished trumpet player. We play duets together. I play classical piano and trumpet as well.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency? Two reasons: The people; and the place. The people are what attracted me to the specialty of family medicine; and specifically, the faculty and residents at FM in Reno. I don’t think there is a better faculty/resident group to be with. After the first two days of my FM clerkship during third year, I realized I hadn’t laughed that much in months. I felt welcomed, supported and encouraged. It was a wonderful atmosphere to be in—I had found my people, and my practice. A big shout-out to my fellow classmates who will be joining me in this year’s intern class—you were a big part of “my peeps” that made me want to stay! The place: Reno-Tahoe, has been my home for 22 years now. I’ve built many professional and personal relationships here. I love this city that is not too big and not too small. I know all my neighbors. The most gorgeous place in the West, Lake Tahoe, is a short drive from my home. The airport is easy to get in and out of. There is almost no traffic. It’s a great place to raise a kid with lots of stuff to do. I can’t imagine being anywhere else!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? During the interview process, UNR FMR stuck out as a program where I could get the best and broadest training in family medicine, with the added benefits of being part of a university. Participating in the couples match opened the possibility that my husband and I would be drawn to different programs; we found in Reno, however, the combination of a small town feel with a larger population size and we both love the outdoors. It was important to us that we have ample OB/GYN training, sports medicine experience and a faculty invested in seeing the residents succeed. We found all of this at UNR as well as a group of residents who felt like people we would want to work with and build lasting friendships.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?Reno has always been on my radar since my undergrad time in the Bay Area for various reasons but most of all the fun family trips to Lake Tahoe and Reno local casinos. Location with varied seasons added extra strengths when it came time for residency application. However, what solidified my commitment to the Reno Family Medicine program was really the experience during the interview. The program portrayed perfect combination between sufficient guidance from staff and adequate autonomy for residents to be independently competent. The bonds and interactions between current residents feel nothing less than being part of a family. I actually felt a sense of belonging even during the interviews and tours. On top of that, the academia with new innovations involving the options of MD/MPH or MD/MBA programs, AND the Elko program, only sealed the deal in my mind that this program is the one to be with. As if that wasn’t enough, this program is constantly growing, despite that fact that they have been around for decades and their alumni are in leadership positions. Medicine is an ever-evolving field and the best place to learn medicine is to be in a program with SOLID PROVEN RECORDS of producing successful physicians.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose UNR for many reasons. Growing up in Auburn, CA the Reno/Tahoe area is like a second home to me. The program offers each resident to become trained in full spectrum family medicine-with unique experiences in OB, peds and Sports Medicine. I also liked that the program was transparent in the structure, requirements and expectations of residents during residency. I was also intrigued by the combined residency/masters programs offered through UNR.

An ideal day for me would be hiking in to some remote mountain lake or stream and introducing myself to some wild trout.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? I am a fourth-generation Nevadan and plan to keep this my home forever. I am particularly interested in serving some of the more rural communities in the state and the School of Medicine Family Medicine program is ideally suited to giving me the training and education to meet those goals. I also am a graduate of the School of Medicine and my interaction with the faculty and residents during my clerkships and sub-internship really cemented my desire to stay with my home program. All of the physicians that are part of the department went above and beyond to teach, mentor and guide me during medical school and I can’t imagine doing residency anywhere else.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? I made the switch to Family Medicine late in medical school and one of the main reasons was my experience with the Reno residents. I get along with everyone well and it’s a great learning environment. The faculty are extremely supportive of all of my educational goals. Additionally, I enjoy working with medical students and knew that there would be many opportunities here. I grew up in Lake Tahoe and wanted to remain in Nevada as my husband and I both love it here. There is so much to do, whether you like festivals, concerts, trying local breweries, or outdoor activities; plus there is an airport in town, which makes traveling that much easier! I feel extremely lucky to have been chosen by such an awesome program.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? Most importantly, the School of Medicine’s Family Medicine chose me! I am looking forward to volunteering at the student run clinic, learning more about community medicine, working with experts in the field of sports medicine and the opportunity to earn a master’s degree with the four-year program.
