Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency? My attraction to the UNR Family Medicine Residency began with the exceptional sports and wilderness medicine training offered. I was certain this program was the place I wanted to be after interviewing. I felt immediately at home and comfortable, and discovered so much more about the people and the program. The Reno area and access to all of the outdoor activities is also a treasure.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, Family Medicine Residency?I chose this program for a lot of different reasons. I found the pediatric experience to be unique compared to many other family medicine programs in that we have such a large volume of pediatric patients that I felt doing my residency here would make me exceptionally prepared to care for children in my future practice. I also found the different backgrounds of the attendings and other residents to be an important part of my decision because I would be able to learn a lot from the people I saw and worked with every day. Plus, Reno is home to me and I see myself practicing here in the future. It made a lot of sense to me to train where I would like to practice so I will have a good handle on the resources available for my patients.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?I chose this fellowship because I am seen as the main team-physician for a NCAA Division I university and have the opportunity to work unimpeded with athletes, trainers, and coaches. This sports fellowship is unique in that it offers scuba certification and 6 weeks of ski medicine (at 2 local ski resorts) as part of the program curriculum and has many opportunities to be involved with wilderness medicine courses, rodeo athletes, and ultra-marathon athletes. The program boasts a fellowship director who, as the former president of the Wilderness Medicine Society, is involved with high altitude medicine and opportunities in Nepal and other areas near Mt Everest base camp. I have the opportunity to work with a renowned sports medicine physician and current AMSSM board member, who created the sports fellowship curriculum, ultrasound fellowship curriculum, and teaches ultrasound at the annual Sports Fellowship conference. I work directly with one of the cardiology pioneers of the athlete ECG which lead to the Seattle Criteria. I have access to a host of dedicated community practitioners. My family medicine continuity clinic and sport medicine clinic are on campus and literally a football stadium walking distance from each other. I have come to love the Reno area with the variety of out-door activities that it offers; including camping, mountain biking, ski resorts and Lake Tahoe; all just a short drive away.

    • Hobbies: Rafting, hiking, hoop dance, acro yoga, dancing, singing, and most importantly hanging out with my dog!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency? There were a few major factors that influenced my decision. First, I’ve been trying to get back home to Northern California for about 5 years, and Reno was almost home. But Reno in and of itself is a fantastic place to live. I’m so excited to have access to Lake Tahoe, skiing, hiking and biking trails, in addition to the developing art and restaurant culture here. But what really stood out to me about this program was how tightly knit the group is. The residents were all very close with each other, but also have a strong bond with many of the attendings. That’s not something I saw in other programs. I knew I wanted to train where I would have the support and friendship of my colleagues, and I know I’ve found that here!
