Research

By current estimates, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 1.7 million cases diagnosed every year as of 2018 and 15-20% of all human cancers been caused by infectious agents, worldwide. The overall goal of my research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of persistence and pathogenesis of human oncogenic gammaherpesvirus, Kaposi's Sarcoma Associated Herpesvirus(KSHV) and neurotropic Zika virus (ZIKV), the two globally important oncolytic viruses. Currently, there are no specific vaccines or antiviral therapies that effectively block KSHV and ZIKV infections, therefore it remains impossible to effectively treat or prevent KSHV as well as ZIKV-related pathologies. My research on KSHV involves determination of functional lytic of origin of KSHV using SMARD approach as well as deciphering the role of KSHV SOX protein during production lytic replication. My ZIKV research focuses on determining the cells/carrier which facilitates the transmission of ZIKV through transplacental barrier. We have shown that ZIKV can infect endothelial cells and circulating monocytes to replicate and induce inflammation and are evaluating specific inhibitors understanding the mechanism of inflammasome activation to control ZIKV induce microcephaly in developing fetus.
