Academy for Development in Academic Medicine

Group photo of ADAM Team membersThe Office of Graduate Medical Education, in partnership with the Office of Faculty Development, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Professional Development, has launched a program for residents, fellows, and graduate and postdoctoral students who are interested in careers in academic medicine. This program, called the Academy for Development in Academic Medicine (ADAM), began July of 2017 and is currently in its fourth year.

ADAM is a 3-year longitudinal program that occurs throughout one's graduate/resident educational tenure and involves training in the skill set needed for a career in academic medicine. Educational sessions are scheduled each month and cover topics related to the development of academic medicine career skills (teaching, scholarship, and leadership).  The program involves a mentorship component, where students have quarterly check-ins with ADAM program directors and they also select faculty mentors and work with them longitudinally. The program culminates with a longitudinal scholarly project and a certificate of completion.

Out of the 40 students involved in ADAM so far, over 72% identified with at least one of our Mission-Based Diversity Groups.  Data across our first three years also indicate significant increases in student reports of their self-efficacy in teaching, engaging in scholarship, and in other skills taught in the program (i.e., selecting mentors, applying for jobs, negotiating during the job offer process).

This year we will be launching our first ADAM Summer Fundamentals session on August 20th, 2021.  This day-long training will include topics such as a panel on careers in medicine, mentorship, developing and delivering effective presentations, introduction to leadership, introduction to scholarship in academic medicine, and applying for jobs in academic medicine.  If you are interested in participating in our ADAM Summer Fundamentals training, please contact Jennifer Dougherty, Ed.D. at jenniferdougherty@med.unr.edu.
