Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:I chose UNR Family Medicine Residency because Reno is my hometown. I went to undergrad here and wanted to stay near my friends and family. Also, the experience I had interviewing with this program really stood out to me. It was very nice to see how supportive the staff and residents were of each-other. After interacting with the faculty/residents, I immediately felt very welcomed. You can just see how devoted the faculty is to teach the residents. I instantly knew I would take away enough knowledge and experience with this program to achieve my career goals.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:While the great outdoor scene in Reno and Tahoe was the initial draw for me to begin my training in Reno, it was the overall fantastic experience during my interview day that really sealed the deal. I knew right away that the residents and faculty were exactly the type of people I wanted to work with on a daily basis. The robust sports medicine program with the fellowship training was also a deciding factor in my decision to train at UNR.

  • Medical School: St. George’s University
  • Undergraduate College: University of Nevada, Reno
  • Career Goals: My love for the scope of family practice coupled with a love of learning makes my future career an open book right now. I cannot wait to discover where this journey is taking me- whether it is full scope family practice, inpatient hospitalist or palliative care.
  • Hobbies: I love to be outside- hiking, running, skiing or paddle boarding up at Lake Tahoe! I also love to spend time with my family and friends. My husband and I have a pretty serious case of wanderlust and want to continue exploring the world. Other than that, you could find me sitting down with a good book or dabbling with some watercolor paints.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:My husband and I met during our undergraduate careers while volunteering at the School of Medicine. We left Reno to attend medical school together at St. George’s University- which was an amazing adventure that allowed us to study abroad and in a variety of locations throughout the United States. But after being away from home for so many years, we knew that coming back to our families and community was next in our journey. During our interview, we reconnected with faculty and residents that we had known from our undergraduate careers- and it truly felt like coming home for us. The entire UNR FMR team was welcoming, friendly and kind. The warmth we felt from the entire team coupled with our love for Nevada is why we chose UNR FMR for our budding careers as Family Medicine Physicians.

  • Career Goals: To provide high quality full-spectrum healthcare care to rural Nevadans. I wish to balance my practice in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, while also integrating osteopathic manipulative medicine when indicated.
  • Hobbies: Off-road expeditions, gardening, cooking, skiing, hiking, and exploring the outdoors with my dogs.

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:It is truly the most unique and balanced residency training program I know of. The community-based model with the university setting, the incredibly friendly faculty and staff, the happy and confident residents were only a few examples of why my heart was set on this program. Furthermore, I have broad and evolving interests including rural and wilderness medicine, both of which are offered at UNR, along with many other opportunities. Furthermore, the Elko site offers a one of a kind training opportunity for which I am tremendously honored to be a part of. On top of a fantastic program, I see the Reno community as one of the best areas in this country to thrive in, that offers something for everyone. This comes from my perspective of traveling to all 50 states. Overall, I was impressed by all regards during my interview and knew this program was the right choice!

  • Medical School: Tulane University School of Medicine
  • Undergraduate College: California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo
  • Career Goals: To practice full-spectrum family medicine in both community clinic and hospital settings. I plan to provide compassionate care to underserved populations and serve those in a rural setting.
  • Hobbies: Trail running, climbing, skiing, surfing, pottery and painting

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:This program not only stood out in the quality of academic training, but also gives Family residents a wide skillset on which to build their career beyond what most residencies have to offer. From rural training to wilderness and community medicine--there is no shortage of opportunities. There is also no shortage of kind, passionate, and inspiring staff, faculty, and fellow residents that seem eager to teach and want you to succeed. Living in the Eastern Sierras, certainly sets this place apart from the rest—actually, there was no comparison. With time off, my family and I can climb, ski, trail-run, mountain-bike, fish, canoe, or even drive out to the coast to be with family in California.

  • Medical School: St. George’s University School of Medicine
  • Undergraduate College: University of Nevada, Reno
  • Career Goals: Full spectrum care for the whole family – from infants to their grandparents – and primary care sports medicine.
  • Hobbies: Traveling the world with my amazing wife! Hiking, paddle boarding, camping, weightlifting, wood working, skiing, snorkeling, creating time for my family and friends, and getting lost in the woods while it’s snowing

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:Nevada has always been my home and even when life has taken my wife and I elsewhere, I long for the mountains, sagebrush and untamed wilderness that make up this truly diverse yet unique state. It also just so happens that I met my wife – who is now also a family medicine physician - while volunteering at a medical clinic in Reno, so it should come as no surprise that we would want to make our home where our story began! During our medical school training we saw many different family medicine programs; learned what would allow us to excel and provide excellent care; and, always found ourselves looking at Reno as the perfect place to be. Extensive training running the full gamut of medicine was high on our list for a residency program, as we both desire the ability to take care of anyone, in any situation; however, it was also important to be learning alongside faculty physicians and senior residents whom we could really enjoy our time with – after all, the field of family medicine is just as much about lifelong medical care as it is about cherishing the bonds we have with others.

This program checked all of those boxes and I left my interview feeling like it was a place that I belonged!

Why did you choose the University of Nevada School of Medicine, Reno Family Medicine Residency?:When you are interviewing for different medical programs, you constantly hear about this “click” you are going to feel with a program no matter how cliché it sounds. Well, that was my feeling with UNR’s family medicine residency. It really gave me a sense of community and family that I didn’t feel in my other interviews. It is a great program that provides flexibility to do the electives you desire, well also being affiliated with a University which provides great didactic learning opportunities. I’m so happy to have matched here and to start my new life back in Reno!

However, I immediately felt at home in getting to know the faculty and residents at this program, which I knew I couldn’t trade for anything. Ultimately, I wanted to be at a place where I deeply resonated with the people. Those that constitute the UNR team are approachable, warm, smart, funny, and authentic; they’re really the kind of people you just want to be around. And then of course the surrounding beauty of the land and access to unparalleled nature was an undeniable draw! I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of this program.
