Student Health Requirements

International Undergraduate Research Program

Before arrival to UNR please ensure you have taken care of the immunization, physical examination, and insurance requirements. These are mandatory items that OISS requires before you may enroll.

Your immunization documents will need to be completed by your family doctor and emailed to OISS prior to your arrival. The instructions for this will be provided by email from OISS.
You will be notified by OISS when your immunization hold has been removed. If you do not complete the required immunizations before your arrival, you will need to complete the immunizations at the Student Health Center at your expense which could cost up to $250 plus. You will not be able to register for classes until these holds are removed.

Immunization Requirements

Information about Student Health Insurance can be found at: On that page is a link for the waiver for international students. Students must be registered in a class before they can request the waiver. You will automatically be billed for the insurance, but you can then request the waiver by following the instructions provided in OISS's enrollment letter. OISS will need to receive documentation that your personal or university insurance covers UNR's minimum requirements.

Your insurance must provide coverage that meets the J-1 federal requirements. Those requirements are:
• Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
• Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
• Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of student to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000
• A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

Note: Expenses incurred at the Student Health Center are not covered by your UNR student fees. If you utilize the Student Health Center and incur an expense for the services provided, you will need to submit the expense to your home university’s health insurance for reimbursement.
