A typical workday for Kim Quinn, Financial Services' chief financial officer for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, includes a lot of time in her chair, analyzing UNR Med budgets, billing and spreadsheets. In her spare time, however, you won't find Quinn anywhere near a desk. Quinn's passion is riding, and she puts a tremendous amount of energy into training herself and her horse, SK Bed of Lillies, known around the barn as simply "Lillie."

When the Reno Rodeo comes to town this week, Quinn and Lillie will watch the action from the best seats in the house. The duo has qualified for the WRPA Women's Barrel Racing and competes Saturday, June 17, marking Quinn's sixth appearance in the "Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West" during her 25-year career.

"Several things go into getting ready for an event like this," said Quinn. "And in a lot of ways, my work plays into the mental preparedness of this event."

Whether the week ahead finds you barreling through paperwork or racing around actual barrels, Quinn has valuable advice for living your best life:

  • Find Your Focus: Be dedicated, and concentrate on the task at hand.
  • Make Time for Personal Fitness: It's important to be mentally and physically sharp. Being sharp allows you to hone in on corrections, instead of getting thrown by mistakes.
  • Forgive and Forget: When something goes wrong, don't be discouraged. Take the time to think about what happened and how you can fix it.
  • Take Calculated Risks: By working to overcome adversity, success will follow.
  • Practice Good Sportsmanship: Don't resent other people's wins - celebrate them.
  • Get Back on the Horse: Don't be afraid to fail. Everyone fails. It's part of the process and only temporary unless you quit - quitting lasts forever. By avoiding failure you're also avoiding success.
