Fundraiser for student medical mission trip this summer

News & Events

Medical students from the Class of 2020 are raising funds to support their medical mission trip to Nicaragua this summer.

"Nicaragua Night," a fundraising dinner, will be held Monday, April 24 at the Sparks location of BJ's Restaurant/Brewhouse from 3 to 11 p.m. Please print out this flyer and bring it with you to BJ's and they will donate 20 percent of food and soft beverage sales to this fundraising effort. A printed flyer must be presented to your server for the donation. Valid for dine-in or take-out; alcohol beverages and happy hour specials are not included.

This effort will support nine medical students from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine traveling to Nicaragua with Bridges to Community this June to aid those in need by rebuilding communities and providing medical relief to the underserved population.

Students participating in this effort include Abigail Stephens, Misha Fotoohi, Patrick Mullett, Nick Andrew, Visesh Ravikumar, Ryan Johnson, Austin Meng, Austin Marrett and Ryan Allen, who are united in their goal to provide healthcare and aid to those in need.

As part of their development as physicians and as individuals, these students are seeking to learn about new cultures and gain knowledge through hands-on experience. Following in the footsteps of UNR Med students in past years who have done this type of medical mission work through Bridges to Community, the Class of 2020's members are looking to make an impact in an underserved population and making a positive difference in peoples' lives. Their goal is to leave the community they will be serving better than they found it, and come away from this experience as better versions of themselves. With your support, they can bring their stories back home, and teach others about how they can progress the care of underserved peoples in the future.

For those who cannot attend the April 24 event at BJ's, online donations to support the students' trip may be made at anytime through May 14.
