The goal was to increase community faculty members from 636 in 2016 to 775 in 2019. The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Office for Community Faculty (OCF) has well surpassed that goal with our 1,000th community faculty member, Shaina Richardson, M.D.

"The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Office for Community Faculty is thrilled to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Richardson, our 1,000th community faculty member," said OCF Director April Heiselt, Ph.D. "We also want to extend a special ‘welcome back,' as Dr. Richardson is one of our UNR Med alumni. It is gratifying when our alumni return and offer to educate our learners, teaching from where they once stood as medical students."

A true member of the Wolf Pack, Dr. Richardson completed her bachelor's degrees ('08) and doctor of medicine ('12) at the University of Nevada, Reno. Among her many medical undergraduate and graduate honors, she served as UNR Med Class of 2012 Vice President and Student Outreach Clinic Community Relations Officer, and was also peer-elected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Dr. Richardson completed her anesthesiology residency at University of Colorado Hospital, and today, she is a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Nevada State Society of Anesthesiologists and both the Nevada State and Washoe County Medical Societies. As an anesthesiologist with Associated Anesthesiologists (an affiliate of MEDNAX), she works in various hospitals throughout northern Nevada, including Renown and St. Mary's.

Dr. Heiselt explains the value of community faculty members like Dr. Richardson and their impact on UNR Med students' education: "Community faculty are pivotal in the education of our medical students as they share their knowledge, skills and abilities in a wide variety of practice environments, giving our students a holistic view of medicine." She continues, "Students often comment that community faculty help them connect what they learn in the classroom to what they practice with their patients."

The OCF team is excited to have surpassed their strategic planning goal for increasing community faculty members, but they are not finished yet. To learn more about becoming a community faculty member, contact the Office for Community Faculty at (775) 682-8390 or visit the OCF website.
