University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine launches 50 for FIFTY giving campaign

Commemorating 50 years with 50 days of unrivaled generosity, unlimited results to support better health in northern Nevada and the state

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is launching a 50 for FIFTY Giving Campaign as part of its 50th anniversary. To commemorate 50 years - for 50 days, from February 4 through March 25, 2019, UNR Med will be raising funds in support of better health and better health care for the state, for northern Nevada and for all residents.

March 25, 2019 will mark the 50-year anniversary of Nevada's first public medical school. Since 1969, the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine has prepared more than 3,100 students, residents and fellows to lead the way to better health. "We pride ourselves on widespread outreach with a local touch, providing patient care and clinical training in Reno and throughout our rural communities," said UNR Med Dean, Dr. Thomas L. Schwenk. "And the research generated in our own backyard is changing and saving lives around the world."

Through the support of the community - local physicians inviting students into their practices, patients allowing learners to observe and donors providing much needed support, UNR Med is training the next generation of physicians and health care professionals.

The 50 for FIFTY Giving Campaign features a new online crowdfunding platform that will allow donors to select from a variety of funds from scholarships and student initiatives to research endeavors and rural education.   Individual funds include:

  • 50th Anniversary Scholarship Endowment. The support of the community has been instrumental in the training of UNR Med students over the past 50 years. This endowment helps ensure UNR Med is able to prepare future physicians to meet the increasing health care needs in communities throughout the state.
  • Donna Turner Rural Education Fund. As a community-based medical school, UNR Med is committed to rural education, as well as care of patients in rural and frontier communities throughout Nevada. This fund supports students' travel and housing expenses during their rural rotations in the memory of Donna Turner, who was committed to providing access to health care in rural communities.
  • David M. Lupan Student Research Endowment. Research is critical to the expansion of knowledge and pursuit of effective treatments. This fund supports medical and graduate student research at the School of Medicine in memory of David M. Lupan, former UNR Med senior associate dean of basic science and research.
  • Diversity & Inclusion Fund. This fund supports efforts to expand and foster a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion through UNR Med programs and initiatives.
  • Faculty & Staff Endowed Scholarship for Medical Students. Led by UNR Med faculty and staff, this scholarship provides financial support to medical students in good standing.
  • Student Outreach Clinic. Under the mentorship of clinical community physicians, this student-run clinic is dedicated to providing free, quality, medical care to the underserved while training future physicians in the compassionate practice of medicine.
  • Physician Assistant Class of 2020. The inaugural Physician Assistant (PA) Class is seeking to send five class leaders to attend the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA Conference). The conference will provide the students access to a network of more than 8,000 attendees, a wide variety of medical education, policy discussions and hands-on learning opportunities. The experience will enrich the students' educational experiences, as well their classmates.

"Celebrating our golden anniversary is a significant and special milestone for UNR Med. We're excited to share not only our historic achievements, but the many innovative developments underway that will transform medical education and health care in northern Nevada, with the community, our alumni, health care partners and our supporters who have graciously supported the school over these five decades," said Schwenk.
