UNR Med Match Day 2018

The UNR Med class of 2018 at Match Day.

Watching the seconds tick down—that's what University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine students will be doing, along with about 18,000 medical students across the country, on Friday, March 15. They have all been waiting four years for Match Day, to learn where they will train in their specialty of choice in their next phase of medical education.

Match Day is our own version of March Madness, where our M.D.s-to-be start the final phase of their four-year academic experience at UNR Med. And, like our Nevada Wolf Pack student-athletes and many other students with a wide range of talents, they have spent countless hours preparing, studying, training and striving to earn their shot at fulfilling their aspirations.

More than 50 years ago, training as a physician in Nevada was just a hoop dream. Then on March 25, 1969, Gov. Paul Laxalt signed legislation that established the University of Nevada School of Medicine. This month we proudly begin the final months of celebrating the golden anniversary of the state's first medical school.

More than just another party or fundraising event, UNR Med's 50th anniversary celebrations come as our school is entering one of the most important times in its history—perhaps as momentous as when we were established. It is a time to recommit to our vision and mission, our constituents and to the state and repeat the vows made by others 50 years ago to be the outstanding medical school Nevada needs.

A lot has changed since 1969. We have come through an extraordinary transition to become fully based and engaged in northern Nevada, but with a continued statewide vision. We have new partnerships, new resources, outstanding facilities, and a large and expert group of faculty and staff members.

What hasn't changed is the need for UNR Med to continue to succeed, grow and serve new patients—particularly in underserved rural and urban areas. What hasn't changed is the incredible and inspiring teamwork among faculty, staff and learners I witness at the School of Medicine each day. What hasn't changed is the need to teach new students and residents, to contribute to science at the global level, to engage deeply and broadly with the community, and to always demonstrate to the state of Nevada why having a medical school in northern Nevada is vital to A Healthy Nevada.

As we approach the final moments of our 50th year, we invite you to join us in our mission to educate a new generation of health care leaders for our state and improve health care access for all. Our 50 for FIFTY giving campaign, now through March 25, aims to support rural education, scholarships, research, diversity and inclusion, our Physician Assistant Studies students, the Student Outreach Clinic and more.

We also invite you to join us for the final events of our 50th anniversary:

Match Day: Friday, March 15

Class of 2019 Doctor of Medicine Academic Hooding Ceremony: Friday, May 17

50th Anniversary Celebration: Friday, May 17
