Reflections from the Dean: A toast to the next 50 years of UNR Med!

News & Events

UNR Med Dean Thomas L. Schwenk, M.D.

As 2019 comes to a close, the memories still linger of so many milestones and markers of success for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. We celebrated our 50th anniversary, the unveiling of our clinical practice plan University Health, the continued growth of our educational programs, successful competition for several major research and training grants and the expansion of our clinical footprint. All of these examples contribute to the community's growing need for health care, the expansion of medical education and our training pipeline and new community partnerships.

Here's a look back at five decades of history as the state's first public medical school and our past year of success.

Since 1969, when the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approved a Reno-based, two-year medical school based in Reno, UNR Med has trained more than 3,500 physicians, with nearly 40% practicing in Nevada and working to address the access to care gap in the state. In March, we commemorated this major milestone with a sold-out Golden Gala celebration that raised nearly $65,000 for medical student scholarships—an amount which continues to grow.

The progress we celebrated would not be possible without the support of our community-local physicians inviting students into their practices, hospitals and health care facilities creating formal clinical, educational and research affiliations, patients allowing learners to observe, and donors providing much-needed scholarship and research funding. Our community partnerships are truly bilateral: The community supports us so we can serve the community.

The first clinical department to adopt the University Health brand was the Department of Internal Medicine, which relocated to a beautiful new building at 6130 Plumas St. in Reno in November. New University Health clinical locations will roll out in 2020 at 6255 Sharlands Ave. and at 745 W. Moana Lane, both in Reno.

University Health provides community-based, patient-centered, multi-specialty primary care services in northern Nevada. This integrated health care model delivers high-quality medical care and demonstrates how improving the patient experience improves clinical teaching and learning.

But, the launch of University Health is just one of several major UNR Med accomplishments during the past year:

We look forward to having you be a part of this exciting time of growth and success as we close out our 50-year history and celebrate the arrival of 2020 and our future 50 years!
