Reflections from the Dean

We are soon to celebrate the close of one of the most extraordinary years in the history of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. UNR Med emerged as a "new" school, but one with a 50-year history and a tradition of educating health care professionals and scientists who go on to serve the community, the state and the world.

This year, we continued to be deeply engaged with our community. We formed many new partnerships that led to several new and impactful programs. We put building blocks in place to expand our clinical services, our teaching network and research opportunities.  As we head into 2019, I would like to reflect on a few highlights from 2018 that were transformative to our school and communities we serve:  

  1. UNR Med, in partnership with Renown Health, launched the first Physician Assistant Studies Program in the Nevada System of Higher Education, a program that will help address the critical need for more health care clinicians in Nevada. The first class of 24 students began instruction in July 2018 and will graduate work-force ready in August 2020.
  2. UNR Med's new department of OB/GYN opened a Women's Health Center, an outpatient clinic on the University campus providing obstetrical, gynecological and midwifery care to women in Reno and northern Nevada.

Northern Nevadans who are uninsured, underinsured or without a social security number can receive free medical care from December through February 2019 at upcoming University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) Student Outreach Clinics including a Rural Outreach Influenza Vaccination Clinic in Silver Springs, Nevada.

CenteringPregnancy is an innovative, evidence-based model of group care that is effectively addressing the complex social determinants of health in pregnancy.

Rural Health Day summit addresses challenges, solutions for rural Nevada health care

Those who call rural Nevada home have an abundance of diverse outdoor adventure at their disposal or can opt for a relaxed, peaceful off-the-grid lifestyle. But, when it comes to having access to specialty health care – rural Nevadans have to look farther.

Hands-on workshop encourages young women to pursue medicine, engineering careers

Saturdays are for adventure and/or power tool jobs, and today, the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) outfitted local high school girls with just that. Approximately 40 northern Nevada teenagers wearing safety goggles and with power tools, pins, clamps and rods in hand, sawed through artificial bone during mock surgery sessions while learning the basics of orthopedic surgery and engineering concepts.
