News for A Healthy Nevada

Thomas Schwenk

Reflections from the Dean

In March 1969, the University of Nevada (now Reno) School of Medicine was founded with a special mission of expanding primary care throughout the state of Nevada, particularly to rural, isolated communities. As we celebrate our first 50 years, and look ahead to the next 50, our strategic focus has expanded to the wider vision of contributing to a Healthy Nevada, even as we transition to our fully-developed “home" in Reno and northern Nevada. While we have much progress to report for 50 years of work, there is much left for us to do.

Improving the health of an entire state is a seemingly impossible undertaking. But we are committed to doing our part, in partnership with so many physicians, educators, healthcare facilities and hospitals who are part of UNR Med. The full strategic vision of our core faculty and staff members will be realized with these partnerships. Following 50 years of development and growth, we are more committed than ever to continuing to do our part to improve the health of the state, as we have for the past 50 years.

The support of the community has been instrumental in the training of over 3,500 students, residents and fellows over the past 50 years. We need your support to continue that record of excellence in teaching, research and patient care.

Join us as we celebrate UNR Med's 50th Anniversary with the 50 for FIFTY Giving Campaign. From Feb. 4 to March 25—yes, 50 days—we're raising funds in support of better health and better health care for our state, for northern Nevada and for each of us. Over the course of the 50-day campaign, we'll introduce you to a few of the many UNR Med learners whose career aspirations have been made a reality through the generosity of scholarships.

Research on sperm transportation reveals new cause of male infertility

January 14, 2019
About 9 percent of men and nearly 11 percent of women of reproductive age in the United States have experienced fertility problems, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In one-third of infertile couples, men are often the cause of the infertility. A new study recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) corrects a 150-year-old concept regarding sperm transport through cilia beat. The findings could lead to new methods in treating male infertility.
