Reflections from the Dean

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine has had, from its very earliest days, a fundamental commitment to serving the healthcare needs of rural Nevada. One of the early deans, Dr. Robert Daugherty, was famous for organizing trips to rural communities with other UNR Med leaders to explore potential educational and clinical collaborations. A rural preceptorship for all fourth-year medical students was an early requirement in the curriculum, and continues to this day. It is often one of the most highly-rated clerkships in a student's entire medical school experience.

For the last 20 years or so, when UNR Med campus was split between Reno for basic science teaching and Las Vegas for much of its clinical teaching capacity, our rural partnerships did not expand as much as we might have wished. We are now returning to our roots and are committed to making our rural outreach more robust than ever before.
