Reflections from the Dean

Watching the seconds tick down—that's what University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine students will be doing, along with about 18,000 medical students across the country, on Friday, March 15. They have all been waiting four years for Match Day, to learn where they will train in their specialty of choice in their next phase of medical education.

Match Day is our own version of March Madness, where our M.D.s-to-be start the final phase of their four-year academic experience at UNR Med. And, like our Nevada Wolf Pack student-athletes and many other students with a wide range of talents, they have spent countless hours preparing, studying, training and striving to earn their shot at fulfilling their aspirations.

More than 50 years ago, training as a physician in Nevada was just a hoop dream. Then on March 25, 1969, Gov. Paul Laxalt signed legislation that established the University of Nevada School of Medicine. This month we proudly begin the final months of celebrating the golden anniversary of the state's first medical school.

More than just another party or fundraising event, UNR Med's 50th anniversary celebrations come as our school is entering one of the most important times in its history—perhaps as momentous as when we were established. It is a time to recommit to our vision and mission, our constituents and to the state and repeat the vows made by others 50 years ago to be the outstanding medical school Nevada needs.
