NEJM Journal Watch

It provides research summaries of recent articles often with expert commentary. Journal Watch is an editorially independent source of synthesized patient care information to help clinicians improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes.

In addition to the research summaries and commentary, there are links to medical news and to three blogs: HIV and ID Observations; Insights on Residency Training; and Clinical Conversations.

Content can also be personalized and received as email alerts based on specialty or topic by selecting the "Sign Up for Email Alerts" link at the bottom of the main page.

Journal Watch is accessible from the Savitt Medical Library's list of databases at https://guides.library.unr.edu/az.php. Off-campus access will require a UNR NetID and password.

Update from Savitt Interlibrary Loan

The National Library of Medicine has announced some big changes for 2019.

  2. NLM is also working on an update to PubMed. A firm release date has not been set at this time.
  3. The Loansome Doc system will retire on July 1, 2019. Don't despair! Loansome Doc patrons can transition their accounts to Illiad and continue using interlibrary loan and document delivery services.

IBM Micromedex

The Savitt Medical Library licenses Micromedex which is a comprehensive, evidence-based clinical decision support tool. It includes resources for medication management, disease and condition management, toxicology management, and more.

Micromedex is available from the Savitt Medical Library's list of databases at: https://guides.library.unr.edu/az.php. If you are off-campus, you will need to enter your UNR NetID and password to access the resource.

Searching by drug name provides in-depth information on dosing, safety, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and toxicology as well as patient education handouts and supplier information.

There are many other search features in Micromedex. Of note, is the Drug Comparison option that allows users to compare, side-by-side and multiple drugs. It also provides a mobile Drug Ref App. Note: select the Download Center in the upper-righthand corner.

American Medical Women’s Association Traveling Exhibit

The Savitt Medical Library invites you to visit the library and view a traveling exhibit launched by the American Medical Women's Association in commemoration of the First World War Centenary.

The exhibit, Women Physicians in World War I, highlights the trailblazing work of American women physicians during the war effort. Although women physicians were prohibited from serving in the Medical Corps, they found ways to participate by volunteering with organizations like the American Women's Hospitals Service, the American Fund for French Wounded, the American Committee for Devastated France, and other overseas hospital units. The exhibit celebrates the contributions of these unsung heroes whose prevailing sense of patriotism and desire to be of service fueled their commitment.
