Josh Baker interim chair of the department of pharmacology

University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine appoints Josh Baker, Ph.D., as Interim Chair of the Department of Pharmacology

UNR Med has appointed Josh Baker, Ph.D., as interim chair of the department of pharmacology effective January 1, 2018 through December 31, 2018.

Baker will serve in the role as UNR Med does a national search for a permanent department chair.

Ryan Wuebbles, Ph.D. and Takako Jones, Ph.D., awarded FSH Society Grant

Department of Pharmacology Research Assistant Professor Ryan D. Wuebbles, Ph.D., and Research Associate Professor Takako Jones, Ph.D., have been awarded a $190,000 grant from the Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy Society (FSH) to conduct investigational new drug (IND)-enabling studies that will hopefully lead to clinical trials.

Barnard Drumm, Ph.D. named second place winner in the 2018 Diokno-Lapides Essay Contest on Urodynamic and Neurourology Research

Department of Physiology and Cell Biology Research Assistant Professor Bernard T. Drumm, Ph.D., has been awarded second place in the 2018 Diokno-Lapides Essay Contest on Urodynamic and Neurourology Research, considered the most prestigious contest in the urology field. Drumm will also be recognized for his self-propelled work on the urethra and renal pelvis at the upcoming American Urological Association (AUA) conference in May.

Diversity Health Series – February 1

Save the date! The next Diversity Health Series is scheduled for Thursday, February 1 from noon – 1 p.m. in PHS 103 and features local psychiatrist Nicole Pavlatos, M.D. In the session titled "Applying the Social Model in Patient Care," Dr. Pavlatos will guide clinicians to a deeper understanding of people first care and lead a discussion on the specific terminology surrounding disability care, patient assessment, microaggressions and proper etiquette for working with patients with disabilities.

William N. Pennington Foundation supports anatomy instruction

The William N. Pennington Foundation recently made a gift to UNR Med to facilitate the purchase of an Anatomage Table Convertible with Digital Library. The Anatomage Table is a powerful tool that offers new ways for medical students to see and interact with human anatomy while providing access to a collection of normal variations and abnormal pathologies.

Faculty evaluations are due in January

There's still time to fill out your 2017 faculty evaluation. Please visit the UNR Med specific faculty evaluation site. The chairs/supervisors of each department will determine their own evaluation due dates. All original and completed department packets are due to Stefani Richards by January 31, 2018.

Nevada Health Center brings health care options for rural patients

The board also approved more than $3.5 million to expand the Graduate Medical Education program beyond the University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Jensen said the program in cooperation with the UNR Medical School, provides residencies for students to include potentially all public hospitals.

Science Distilled: Genetics, the key to my heart?

Science Distilled is a new lecture series created by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum. The upcoming lecture, "Genetics, the key to my heart?" features UNR Med Assistant Professors and Clerkship Director Lisa Calvo, M.D., Renown Institute for Heart & Vascular HealthCardiologist Chris Rowan, M.D., and Intensive Cardiac Rehab at Renown Health Director Lynice Anderson who will discuss how emerging research points to genetics in understanding risk and improving diagnoses for cardiac-related issues.
