UNR Med growth spurs new Office for Faculty and expanded faculty support

While UNR Med is aiming to increase the number of physicians in Nevada by educating more medical students, residents and fellows, we also understand the central role of our faculty members in producing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Because the learner experience is so heavily shaped by faculty, UNR Med is launching the Office for Faculty, a new department created to support faculty in their teaching roles, encourage faculty engagement and promote overall faculty excellence.

Led by Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Jennifer Hagen, M.D., the new Office for Faculty brings together the Office of Faculty Development, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office for Community Faculty and the Office of Professional Recruitment to better serve UNR Med faculty members. In addition, a new Office for Faculty Affairs, which will be formally established later this year, will address promotion and tenure, policy, and issues overlapping with human resources.

Nevada elected officials and community leaders are medical students for a day at UNR Med

In one day, 13 state legislators, city officials, CEOs and community leaders experienced a sample of four years of medical school. In the process, they received a first-hand look into what it takes to train future physicians for Nevada and the nation. The unique experience today was part of Project Medical Education, a community outreach program run by UNR Med. The program is designed to give community leaders insight into public medical education and the opportunities and challenges facing medical schools and teaching hospitals in the state.

Project Medical Education provided its ninth matriculation class a day with UNR Med faculty and staff members, medical students and residents. The program included an overview of the School of Medicine, the experience of being "admitted" to medical school, and various hands-on interactions in the lab and simulation center that illustrated a medical student's pathway to becoming a fully-trained physician.
