Endowed Chair in Medical Biochemistry

University of Nevada, Reno Foundation Trustee Mick Hitchcock, Ph.D. recently established the Mick Hitchcock, Ph.D. Endowed Chair in Medical Biochemistry at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. More than 70 faculty, staff, students, friends, donors, Board of Regents and University leaders attended the lecture and reception which welcomed the inaugural chair, Peter L. Jones, Ph.D., March 6 at the Joe Crowley Student Union.

Jones and his wife and co-principal investigator, research associate professor Takako Jones, Ph.D., bring their research lab to the Department of Pharmacology. The primary research focus of the Jones Lab is on facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, or FSHD, the most prevalent muscular dystrophy affecting men, women and children.

Strategic Plan Website Is Live

The strategic plan website offers in-depth information about the history and process of our planning journey, as well as links to our projected objectives and outcomes. The site will eventually offer an interactive dashboard which will illustrate the progress that has been made within each initiative. We recently printed a booklet, “Our Strategic Plan for a Healthy Nevada: 2017-2019,” which maps the School of Medicine’s strategic initiatives, objectives and measureable outcomes for the next three years. Savitt Medical Library Website Moves March 21

Beginning March 21, the Savitt Medical Library’s current URL will redirect to the new site – library.unr.edu/savitt. The website’s new look was selected to be cohesive with the larger University of Nevada, Reno Libraries platform. The redesign offers a number of advantages, including providing simpler transitions to and from the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center website. if you haven’t done so already, take a look and let them know what you think!

The Women’s Summit

The University of Nevada, Reno Committee on the Status of Women invite you to register for The Women’s Summit, which will be held Wednesday, March 15 at the Joe Crowley Student Union. Speakers include Nevada System of Higher Education Regent Allison Stephens and Reno City Councilwoman Naomi Duerr.

Nevada Crisis Standards of Care

The Division of Public and Behavioral Health invite you to attend an upcoming Nevada Crisis Standards of Care (CSC) Clinical Stakeholder Meeting, Thursday, May 4 in Las Vegas or Thursday, May 11 in Reno. This is an open invitation to provide input on the crucial clinical section of the Nevada CSC Plan, which will detail how Nevada’s healthcare system will respond during a major catastrophe.

In memoriam: Cynthia L. Ferrell, M.D., M.S.Ed. (1966-2017)

Dr. Ferrell received her medical degree from the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine in 1992, then came to OHSU as a pediatrics resident, serving as chief resident in 1995-1996.

University Orthopaedics and Spine Brings Together Four Surgeons

Michael Daubs, MD joins University Orthopaedics and Spine (4750 W. Oakey Blvd.) and specializes in orthopaedic surgery. Daubs completed his medical training at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Daubs also serves as professor and chief of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine.

Washoe County should fluoridate water: 2 UNR pediatricians

Fluoridation is the controlled adjustment of the fluoride concentration of a public water supply to reduce took decay (also called dental cavities) caused by mouth bacteria that made acids from the sugar we consume.
