Resident and Fellow Research Day

Each year, the Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME) sponsors Resident and Fellow Research Day to offer residents and fellows the opportunity to present case studies, original research or quality improvement projects to their faculty and peers. This year, the Office of Medical Research also sponsored the event with a guest presentation and Q&A by Danielle Eaton. The top two presenters-internal medicine resident Jessica Ferahi, "Great distance to an academic medical center is associated with poorer melanoma prognostic factors" and psychiatry resident Swetha Sirisinihal, "Depakote-induced isolated hyperammonemia"-each received $1,000 in travel scholarships.

Special thanks to the three judges: Dean Thomas L. Schwenk, M.D.; Associate Dean for the Office of Statewide Initiatives John Packham, Ph.D. and ACOS for Research at the V.A. Elizabeth E. Hill, Ph.D., RN.

Unconscious bias and healthcare disparities:
How we don’t know what can hurt our patients – June 7

Save the date! Thursday, June 7 at noon in PHS 102, Associate Dean of Diversity and Inclusion Nicole Jacobs, Ph.D., will lead a discussion on unconscious bias, a review of data on healthcare disparities faced by various patient populations and an examination of how implicit bias can contribute to the perpetuation of disparities. The discussion will end with an overview of ways we can skillfully manage bias to prevent healthcare disparities in the future.
