Welcome, Dr. Shaina Richardson, UNR Med’s 1,000th Community Faculty Member

The goal was to increase community faculty members from 636 in 2016 to 775 in 2019. The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Office for Community Faculty (OCF) has well surpassed that goal with our 1,000th community faculty member, Shaina Richardson, M.D.

"The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine's Office for Community Faculty is thrilled to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Richardson, our 1,000th community faculty member," said OCF Director April Heiselt, Ph.D. "We also want to extend a special ‘welcome back,' as Dr. Richardson is one of our UNR Med alumni. It is gratifying when our alumni return and offer to educate our learners, teaching from where they once stood as medical students."

A true member of the Wolf Pack, Dr. Richardson completed her bachelor's degrees ('08) and doctor of medicine ('12) at the University of Nevada, Reno. Among her many medical undergraduate and graduate honors, she served as UNR Med Class of 2012 Vice President and Student Outreach Clinic Community Relations Officer, and was also peer-elected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion presents the Diversity Health Series; a lecture and conversation series designed to promote cultural competence and humility amongst healthcare providers on our campus and in the area, including community faculty members. Join us on Thursday, Sept. 7 at noon in PHS 103 for the first session, "Unconscious Bias and Healthcare Disparities: How What We Don't Know Can Hurt Our Patients." The session will cover healthcare disparities and how implicit bias may contribute to inequities in healthcare outcomes in underserved populations. One hour of CME credit will be offered to those who need it.

Keep an eye out for future sessions over the academic year on Safe Zone training, caring for patients with disabilities and rural health. Contact Associate Dean, Diversity and Inclusion Nicole Jacobs, Ph.D., for more information.
