Darryll Patterson, M.D., and Nolan Mischell '17 M.D.

Darryll Patterson, M.D., receives the class-selected Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award at the UNR Med 2017 Awards Ceremony, presented by Nolan Mischell '17 M.D. Dr. Patterson has been named interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine following the retirement of Catherine Goring, M.D.

Dr. Patterson named interim chair of Department of Internal Medicine

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine has named Darryll Patterson, M.D., interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Patterson has served in exemplary fashion as associate professor and medical director of the department, providing strong leadership to several major outpatient initiatives. He has now agreed to follow Catherine Goring, M.D., as the next department lead, with a focus on meeting both clinical and academic missions in an integrated, synergistic fashion, as well as continuing to build on strong relationships with Renown Health and the community.

Save the date: UNR Med hosts WIN Breakfast Sept. 28

In celebration of the School of Medicine's 50th Anniversary, UNR Med will host WIN's monthly power breakfast Friday, Sept. 28 at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. The event will feature opening remarks by UNR Med Dean Thomas Schwenk, M.D., followed by Bill Eckstrom of the EcSell Institute, presenting "Becoming Comfortable with Discomfort." The breakfast buffet opens at 7 a.m., with the program from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tickets are $35 for non-members, $20 for members.

Join us for 2018-19 admissions interviews

As UNR Med begins its fifth year using Multi Mini Interviews (MMI), all faculty, staff and community partners are invited to participate in the admissions process as interviewers for the 2018-19 medical student admissions cycle. The time commitment will include one, two-hour training session and a minimum of two MMI sessions lasting less than three hours each. This is a minimum commitment of 7.5 hours, which can be fulfilled between August and February. If this is your first time interviewing, you must attend training. Please contact Lisa Kornze, MMI Coordinator, or (775) 682-6754, with questions.

Gray’s Anatomy sculpture by UNR Med students on display

A new book sculpture is on display at the Savitt Medical Library: A Gray's Anatomy-inspired skeletal sculpture created by UNR Med class of 2021 medical student and artist Rachael Lambin, with the assistance of her brother, fellow class of 2021 medical student, John-Henry Lambin. The artwork is a donation from the Lambins to UNR Med.

Visit the sculpture in the foyer of Pennington Medical Education Building at the entrance to Savitt Medical Library, and view photos from the artists' reception at Plumas Bank on July 25.

UNR Med faculty, clinical community faculty and alumni honored as 2018 Healthcare Heroes

UNR Med faculty, clinical community faculty and alumni earned honors at Nevada Business Magazine's 13th Annual Healthcare Heroes award program on Sept. 5. UNR Med affiliated honorees include northern Nevada Physician of the Year Derek Beenfeldt, M.D. '11, chief of primary care, Renown Health; northern Nevada Lifetime Achievement David Zucker, M.D., pediatrician, Pediatric Associates; northern Nevada Community Partner of the Year Peter Reed, Ph.D., MPH, director, Sanford Center for Aging, UNR Med; and northern Nevada Educator of the Year Jeremy Matuszak, M.D., MBA, FAPA, DFAACAP, medical director, Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. The annual award program honors Nevadans making significant contributions to health care across 10 categories in both the northern and southern regions of the state. Proceeds from the award programs benefit students pursuing careers in health care education. Please join us in congratulating all the honorees.
