News for A Healthy Nevada

Rural Nevada Road

UNR Med is another step closer to providing more health care resources and options to the residents of Elko through the much-anticipated grand opening of our Elko Family Medicine Residency Program.

Reflections from the Dean

By Thomas L. Schwenk, M.D.

As the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine celebrates its 50th Anniversary of serving Nevada as the state's first medical school, increasing access to quality health care remains a priority for UNR Med, including those in our rural and underserved communities. I am extremely pleased, and immensely proud that UNR Med is another step closer to providing more health care resources and options to the residents of Elko through the much-anticipated grand opening of our Elko Family Medicine Residency Program.

By training resident physicians under the supervision of experienced UNR Med faculty, the program aims to increase the primary care physician workforce in Elko and surrounding areas and provide greater health care access to rural Nevadans.

We are pleased to team with Nevada Health Centers to extend our medical training and clinical care reach to Elko and surrounding communities, and we thank Governor Sandoval and the Graduate Medical Education Task Force for their support in expanding these critically important resident programs.

Learn more about how UNR Med is working to close health care gaps in our state and train the next generation of physicians at the 2018 State of the School Address on Monday, Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Basin Street Club at Mackay Stadium. RSVP today to attend.

Notes from this discussion will be taken and de-identified themes will be shared with administration.
