Zika Virus: An unlikely hero?

“Only time and peer-reviewed research will tell,” says Dr. Verma

Zika virus (ZIKV) made international headlines just before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil after alarming rates of South American infants were born with abnormal brain development, resulting in small heads, also known as microcephaly.

As Zika virus continues to garner international attention, researchers are hard at work.

Recently, investigators out of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of California San Diego School of Medicine made the claim, "Zika virus kills brain cancer stem cells," in a study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

UNR Med's Subhash C. Verma, Ph.D., associate professor in the department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology discusses this research and describes how his own team is attempting to help the medical community better understand the mechanics of ZIKV and possibly prevent microcephaly in newborns.
