News for A Healthy Nevada

Seema Donahoe giving blood.

#BleedSilverandBlue Blood Drive – Today!

Did you know blood donations decrease more than 20 percent during the holiday season? Or that less than 10 percent of eligible U.S. donors give blood each year?

The Student Wellness Committee is teaming with United Blood Services Reno to bring the Bloodmobile to the Silver 10 parking lot in front of the Pennington Health Sciences building today, December 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As a "thank you" for saving up to three lives, donors will receive a voucher for a free small Port of Subs sandwich and medium drink, plus a pair of United Blood Services holiday socks!

If you weren't able to book an appointment, walk-ins will still be accepted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Remember to fill out your Fast Track Health History Questionnaire in advance for a speedier donation. Thank you for giving the gift of blood this holiday season!

Dr. Peter Reed Named Community Foundation of Western Nevada Volunteer of the Month

For the month of November, the Community Foundation recognized Sanford Center for Aging Director Peter Reed, Ph.D., MPH, as volunteer of the month for his work developing the Caregiver Support Initiative. Additionally, UNR Med's Sanford Center for Aging collaborated with the Savitt Medical Library to create, a resource database for family caregivers in Washoe County.

The UNR Med Office of Academic Affairs has adopted a family for the holidays, and contribution sign-ups are still available in PME 218. Items that are still needed include RC cars, musical games/toys, women's jacket size medium, toaster oven, mop, nonperishable food, car and household cleaning supplies and toilet paper. Please wrap all gifts except food and toiletries, and bring them labeled with the recipient's name to PME 213 by Wednesday, Dec. 13.

If you wish to contribute, but slots are taken, please bring gift cards from stores including Target, Walmart and Babies "R" Us for groceries, gas, and pharmacy.

Thank you for helping us give a deserving community family a happier holiday!
