Goals/Objectives

  • Obtain a detailed musculoskeletal history for acute and chronic orthopedic problems
  • Understand and perform detailed examinations of major joints
  • Describe and perform splint application
  • Describe and discuss three common orthopedic conditions
  • Describe and discuss three uncommon orthopedic conditions
  • Begin to evaluate plain radiographs for orthopedic pathology and become familiar with use of CT and MRI imaging in this discipline

Description of Rotation

This is a two-week rotation focusing on orthopedic care. Students will see a wide variety of conditions and should anticipate seeing patients with both chronic and acute injuries. Students will have the opportunity to see patients in the office, learn focused history taking and specialized musculoskeletal examinations of all joints. There will be ample time to see repairs of injuries and operative techniques for managing chronic conditions.

Evaluation Method

Written evaluation by faculty preceptor and the student will give one short presentation on a topic of their interest.

Grade

  • Honors: An exceptional performance which exceeds all course objectives
  • High Pass: A performance which exceeds most course objectives
  • Pass: A performance which meets the course objectives
  • Fail: A performance which does not meet the course objectives
