Goals/Objectives

  • Students will learn the fundamentals of emergency medicine as they evaluate and manage adult and pediatric patients with acute illness and injuries who present to the emergency department.

Description of Rotation

Students will participate in the initial evaluation, diagnosis, and management of undifferentiated patients presenting to the emergency department. The student will work shifts at the sub-intern level under the direct supervision of Emergency Medicine Attendings at the Renown Emergency Departments, the Saint Mary's Emergency Department, or at a mixture of the two sites. Students may request a specific site but department availability will also be considered in assigning students to an elective location. One shift will be dedicated to emergency medical services in an ambulance ride along. Students will be taught to perform procedures on their patients including wound repair, incision and drainage of abscesses, reduction of fractures and dislocations, lumbar puncture, paracentesis, and endotracheal intubation as opportunities arise. Students will be expected to become more comfortable caring for patients with acute illnesses and injuries, to learn to generate broad differential diagnoses, and to acquire an introductory knowledge base in emergency medicine. They will gain experience interacting with patients, families, consultants, and medical team members. This rotation is appropriate for students pursuing careers in emergency medicine, primary care, and surgical specialties.
