Goals/Objectives
- To gain exposure in the inpatient management of acutely ill patients with refining of history, physical examination and oral presentation skills.
Description of Rotation
The fourth-year student will participate in daily morning and afternoon rounds as well as evaluate newly admitted patients and perform initial history and physical examinations. Students will be expected to develop a differential diagnosis and management plan based on their evaluation and appropriately document their findings as in the clerkship rotation, using the templates provided. Students will continue to follow patients and document progress notes on a daily basis. Apart from rounds, an oral presentation should be given once during the rotation to the team on a topic of your choosing related to inpatient medicine. This elective expects the student to be present for 20 days for a 4-week rotation or 10 days for a 2-week rotation, in addition to a call night (until 10pm) once per week. If two students are on the elective at the same time, they will work with Diane and Dr. McWilliams to develop a schedule with both day and night exposure that maximizes autonomy and minimizes the overlapping of students on the rounding team. Any days missed for interviews, illness, examinations, etc. can be made up on weekends.
