Goals/Objectives

  • Discussion and literature search of therapeutic problems in medicine.
  • Typically, projects will cover indications and contraindications of drug therapy in relation to basic pharmacologic properties; expected beneficial results, possible side effects, adverse reactions, and drug interactions.
  • A focus on evidence-based approaches to treatment in selected areas of therapeutics.

Description of Rotation

The rotation is a self-directed learning experience using a tutorial format. The student identifies a preceptor based on the topic to be studied then meets with the preceptor on a mutually agreeable schedule (e.g. weekly). Usually an outline of the topic is prepared by the student followed by meetings to discuss progress. Students are encouraged to prepare a publishable manuscript from their efforts.

Evaluation Method

A 10-20 page paper is prepared on the topic of interest and is submitted to the preceptor at the end of the elective. Manuscripts are expected to be of publishable quality.

Grade

  • Honors: An exceptional performance which exceeds all course objectives
  • High Pass: A performance which exceeds most course objectives
  • Pass: A performance which meets the course objectives
  • Fail: A performance which does not meet the course objectives

Grading Criteria

Grades are assigned based on achieving the learning objectives as judged by meetings between student and preceptor and assessment of the final written report.
