Alia Tuqan was born and raised in Orange County, California. After graduating from Claremont McKenna College, she obtained her medical degree at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California and her geriatrics fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she stayed as a faculty member.
Her interest in medical education grew upon completion of her UCLA medical education fellowship. She is board-certified in internal medicine, geriatrics, as well as hospice and palliative care. Before relocating to Reno in 2015, she spent five years primarily seeing geriatric clinic patients, age of 65 and older. She also did geriatrics and palliative care consultations and supervised internal medicine residents on the inpatient geriatrics service at Ronald Reagan and Santa Monica UCLA Medical Centers. Her teaching focused on instructing medical students to better communicate with their patients and training internal medicine residents and geriatrics and palliative care fellows in the clinic and the hospital. At the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, in addition to seeing geriatric clinic patients age 65 and older, she will continue to focus on medical education through precepting internal medicine residents in their clinics.
