I chose to come to Reno for both residency and fellowship because this program nurtures a sense of community and respects that we are humans more than just employees. Our program allows for a balance between work and life. I can be both a doctor during the day and a mom of two kids when not at work. Reno has a great selection of activities both indoor and out, and our job allows enough time off to actually enjoy being part of this engaging city. Our program has opportunities for research and publishing, and we choose if we participate rather than being required. I feel having a choice leads to better research verses publishing just for the sake of publishing. On the practical side of why UNR was my first choice for residency and fellowship, are considerations like no duty hour violations which ensures we are rested enough to be good doctors and excellent health insurance which ensures we take care of our own health in order to be good doctors. There are also options to begin moonlighting during the second year which provides both additional income and increased autonym and learning. If I could go back through the MATCH again, I would still choose UNR as my first choice for residency and fellowship mainly because I feel that I am receiving excellent training in psychiatry.
