Call Responsibilities

  1. Frequency:
    1. PGY-1 Call
    2. PGY-2 Call Every sixth day.
    3. PGY-3 Call Two non-consecutive weekend days per month.
    4. PGY-4 Call up to three weekend days per month. While their primary responsibility is to train, directly supervise and evaluate the Intern during training days, they remain responsible for all on-call responsibilities listed in this section.
  2. Cap of 6 workups per call day (a workup is defined as a psychiatric evaluation with or without a physical examination).
  3. The resident is responsible for evaluation of a patient within 1 hour after seclusion or restraint order is given at NNAMHS.
  4. Interns do not take formal call. However, they are assigned Training Days while on inpatient psychiatry rotations. Interns are assigned up to three weekend Training Days per month and are supervised by a Senior Resident who is on-call. Interns should be in- house, or available to be in-house from 8am - 5pm at the direction of the Senior Resident or the Attending. Intern responsibilities include all on-call responsibilities. Even if the Intern has successfully completed three Level of Supervision evaluations, they should not be in-house without the on-call resident being physically present.
  5. Specific site responsibilities:
    1. NNAMHS/VA Hospital:
      1. If the assigned call day falls during Monday through Friday, the resident is available to respond to questions/requests from hospital staff from 5:00 pm - 8:00 am (NNAMHS) or 4:30pm to 8:00 am (VA) the following day. For either Saturday or Sunday calls (or weekday calls that fall on a VA or NNAMHS recognized holiday), the resident is available from 8:00 a.m. on the day of their call to 8:00 am the following day. On Saturdays, the on call resident is responsible for completing work ups (including physical examinations at NNAMHS and VAMC) on all new inpatient admissions within the time period of Friday after 3:00pm until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Similarly for Sundays, the on call resident is responsible for completing work ups (including physical examinations at NNAMHS and VAMC) on all patients admitted to the inpatient unit from Saturday after 3:00pm until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. All admissions after 3pm on Sunday are to have their workups completed by the regular weekday inpatient staff on Monday.

        The resident is not responsible for physical examinations left undone from the previous day when admitted before the 3:00 p.m. cutoff.

        The resident is not responsible for psychiatric evaluations or physical exams in emergency service/POU while on call.

        When taking call on the weekend or holidays; the resident is responsible for contacting their assigned on call attending by at least the day prior to their call to coordinate time for meeting/rounding.
    2. Renown Hospital:
      1. The Saturday on-call resident is resident is responsible for new psychiatric consultations from Friday after 3pm to Saturday at 3pm.
  6. In the event that there is not a full complement of residents, there may be an adjustment to the on-call frequency.
  7. The selling of call is prohibited.
