PGY 1: Goals and Objectives

Upon completion of PGY-1 and before progressing to PGY-2, residents must have accomplished the following:

  1. Successfully completed:
    1. Four-month internal medicine rotation,
    2. Two-month neurology rotation,
    3. Three-month inpatient psychiatry rotation at the VA Medical Center, and
    4. Three-month substance use disorder rotation at West Hills Hospital.
  2. Demonstrate basic clinical competence in:
    1. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of general medical patients,
    2. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of neurological patients, and
    3. Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of general psychiatry inpatients
  3. Demonstrate basic knowledge regarding:
    1. Major psychiatric disorders and their treatment,
    2. Common medical conditions and their treatment, and
    3. Common neurological conditions and their treatment.
  4. Demonstrate developing interpersonal skills competency with:
    1. Patients and family,
    2. Support staff and treatment team,
    3. Fellow professionals: Fellow residents, Residents of other specialties, Referring physicians, and Faculty.

Any exceptions to the requirements above must be approved by the Residency Education Committee.
