PGY-2 Three Month Rotation in Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry in Renown

Competencies to be achieved by the end of the rotation:

Patient Care

  1. Demonstrate the ability to take a thorough and complete medical and psychiatric history from patients, family members and health care providers.
  2. Show the ability to adequately treat delirium in a medically ill patient.
  3. Show the ability to adequately treat mood disorders in a medically ill patient.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately use supportive psychotherapy techniques in a hospital setting.
  5. Demonstrate the appropriate use of laboratory tests to evaluate causes of psychiatric symptoms in a medically ill patient.
  6. Demonstrate the appropriate use of radiologic imaging to evaluate psychiatric symptoms in a medically ill patient.

Medical Knowledge

  1. Know the causes of altered mental status.
  2. Demonstrate adequate knowledge of commonly prescribed drugs which can cause alterations in mood, cognition and behavior.
  3. Demonstrate adequate knowledge of the medical conditions commonly causing psychiatric symptoms.
  4. Know the indications for use of ECT in general psychiatry patients as well as the medially ill patient.

Practice Based Learning and Improvement

  1. Demonstrate the ability to learn independently by identifying one area of knowledge deficit.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to appropriately collect new information in knowledge deficit area.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to apply to knowledge to patient care issues.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  1. Demonstrate the ability to work with ancillary staff by verbally discussing patient issues with line staff directly involved in the care of the patient.
  2. Interact appropriately with all referring physicians and consultants.

Professionalism

  1. Show respectful and professional behavior by being on time to team meetings.
  2. Demonstrate appropriate diligence to clinical documentations as evidenced by completion of all notes and dictations on time.

System-based Practice

  1. Know how to refer to other agencies within the health care system.
  2. Provide appropriate information to health care agencies or legal entities to insure appropriate patient care.
