As we approach the 50th anniversary of the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, we've adopted the celebratory tagline "Unrivaled history. Unlimited future." It's a tagline that speaks to the successes of the School of Medicine since its establishment in March 1969. It also speaks to the accomplishments on the near horizon, not to mention the ideas we haven't even begun to imagine.

Our cover story on pages 2-5, "Legacy of Success," introduces you to three recent graduates whose medical school journeys led them to follow in their parents' footsteps. But the School of Medicine's legacy of success doesn't end there.

Our photo galleries on pages 6-9 will bring you the beaming faces of our M.D., gerontology, speech pathology and audiology graduates-along with three M.D.s who just earned their MPH degrees-each one successfully completing a rigorous program of study.

On pages 10-14, you'll meet Crystal Phares, a current medical student. She and her wife, Megan, successfully navigated the birth of their first child, thanks to a little help from their UNR Med friends.

You will discover the work of Ryan Wuebbles, Ph.D., on pages 20-23. For Wuebbles, each success in the lab brings him closer to solving the mystery of his own disease - FSHD.

While we were relaunching our magazine, we were also successfully launching a new department of surgery and women's health center (pages 18-19), not to mention a new physician assistant studies program (pages 16-17).

From cover to cover, the return of Synaspe is filled with ways we're adding to our unrivaled history and planning for our unlimited future. Our legacy of success is nearly 50 years long, and I couldn't be more excited to see what comes next.

- Thomas L. Schwenk, M.D.
