Story by Ellyn Kirtley

Each year, the Office of Graduate Medical Education sponsors Resident and Fellow Research Day to offer residents and fellows the opportunity to present case studies, original research and quality improvement projects to their faculty and peers. This year, the Office of Medical Research also sponsored the event with a guest presentation and Q&A by Danielle Eaton. The top two presenters - internal medicine resident Jessica Ferahi, "Great distance to an academic medical center is associated with poorer melanoma prognostic factors" and psychiatry resident Swetha Sirisinihal, "Depakote-induced isolated hyperammonemia" - each received $1,000 in travel scholarships.

Special thanks to our judges: School of Medicine Dean Thomas L. Schwenk, M.D.; Associate Dean for the Office of Statewide Initiatives John Packham, Ph.D. and ACOS for Research at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System Elizabeth E. Hill, Ph.D., RN.

About the Office of Graduate Medical Education

The Office of Graduate Medical Education's mission is to provide interns, residents and fellows outstanding training through supervised patient care, hands-on learning, simulation and didactic education with opportunities for rotations in rural Nevada.

As a community-based medical school, we partner with local hospitals, including Renown Health and the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, to provide clinical sites for our programs. Our faculty are actively engaged in providing teaching and mentorship to our learners to enhance educational experiences and facilitate success.

We currently offer three residency programs and four fellowship programs with plans for additional programs in development, including surgery and OB/GYN.

Our programs meet and exceed the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements in each discipline. In addition, UNR Med was recently named one of nine national Pathway Leaders selected to participate in the AGCME's Patient Safety Collaborative.
